2024–25 Australian Domestic Season

It's still happening now. If a batter got injured on the current Tour, they could field a batting unit with 4 keepers (Pope, Duckett, Smith, Cox).
Yeah. It's not ideal IMO because you don't want your best batsmen batting so far down (acknowledging that a lot of these batsmen bat up the order) - it leads to question marks over what they'll do against better bowlers who are able to extract more movement, more consistently.

Do Australia potentially have a spot free at 6, or is that going to be Marsh? I guess without Green, that needs to be an all rounder now?

Marsh is meant to be the allrounder. Smith wil bat four so unless Head, Marnus or Marsh is moved up to open there’s no spot in the middle order (though imo Marsh won’t last the series - terrific fella and done a great job but I really think he’ll get found out by Bumrah et al)

I have a terrible sneaking suspicion that a lot of Green's all-rounder duties are going to be fulfilled by... Marnus Labuschagne. Marsh hasn't even bowled in this round of games (despite WA using seven bowlers in his stead) whereas Marnus, er, has.

As far as specialist batsmen go for the middle order, probably the people most want/are most hopeful for is Nathan McSweeney - Aus A captain two years running now and has started the season well. Also a not terrible bowling option, though he bowls offies instead of seam up.

In fact if we saw a team at some point this summer that looked like

Khawaja
A. Opener
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
McSweeney
Carey

I honestly would not be opposed to that at all.

I guess the other option is get Head to bowl more overs. Seems to have a knack of getting wickets in ODI's, maybe that could transfer to Tests.

SA are ahead of Qld by 358. Hopefully SA declare overnight or Neser takes the last SA wkt early tomorrow. To set 360 on the last day is a bit steep but would make a fantastic game given SA scored 8/352 today off 92 overs

That wasn't even a bad decision. Smith's whiny reaction clearly influencing the weak-minded
Yeah, it's certainly not a shocker and could easily be umpire's call. He's played no shot to one which was swinging in, it's a risk no matter what.

Lucky he's not a Test opener anymore if he leaves balls like that. Scott Boland has it right:

"They can talk about it all they want," said Boland. "I thought it was out. It only has to hit the stumps when you don't use your bat like that."

SA v QLD definitely interestingly poised here. Probably have the bananabenders as slight favourites here unfortunately, they certainly have enough time

Both other games kinda seem like foregone conclusions though

MCG is doing it's "better to bat as the game goes on" thing. Philippe looks a million bucks and Starc is being strangely patient. Still a long way to go but there will be nerves among the Vics
