Yeah, she'd definitely still be thereabouts IMO (injuries permitting). One of those freak athletes that's annoyingly good at whatever she turns her hand to.

Yeah I don't get it either. If the matches were all 7-6, I might give it some credence, but that might be fun in itself. Actually considering the average height back when the goals were made, perhaps the mens should be bigger, but let's face it neither is happening.

As for Perry, there's no guarantee that she would have stayed in the Matildas side, injuries are more prevelant in football than cricket, and it's not like a defender in woman's football earns anything like in mens, think she easily made the right choice, she's got the Bash and IPL coming up, the coins still fairly big.
Women’s football is still in its infancy

Perry’s goal would be goal of the tournament as it wasn’t a tap in & truly a world class strike

Perry, Barty and Cathy Freeman would be global football superstars because they’re elite athletes playing against kids

Main objection in Australia was cost of changing goals for different games at club level

Also an argument for reducing field size but that involves even more problems

People forget or ignore that women’s cricket is played with a lighter ball
I don't get the pitch size change in football as women aren't any less fit are they?

It's not really in it's infancy, it may have been when Perry scored that great goal, but she made the right choice imho, shame people can't do dual-sports nowadays. Oh and wasn't Barty pretty **** at cricket?

being kind of mid in the premier women's t20 league in the world is still putting you in the top 0.01% of players of that sport though

Mate, she got paid

Anyone who gets paid is elite

She’s also an elite golfer

And her only experience was in the backyard

They didn’t pay her because she was an unknown tennis player

Ha, this article from a few weeks before the tournament: https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...ccer-national-team-2023-fifa-womens-world-cup

“I still feel a bit like [I have] impostor syndrome,” she says. “You know, do I belong here? I don’t actually know. I sometimes forget that I actually play for the Matildas, even for Sydney FC. When I’m walking around, some people want my photo and I get a bit shocked and a bit awkward.”
She's gonna need to get used to that.

Less power so crosses float in

Goal size makes more sense to me
Both options would hugely benefit defensive play though, which I don't think the women's game needs. Would probably make it pretty dire to watch as teams would be able to crowd out any space.

So the semis, the bookies clearly think it will be a Spain v England Final, but very hard to predict. I don't think we can look too much into the Eng v Aus friendly earlier in the year. Both teams were missing players, England had 71% possession and 15 attempts on goal to 5 Australian yet lost 2-0. Assume Kerr will start this one and will be up against her Chelsea team mates Bright and Carter. By no means the only club match ups, these players must know each other pretty well.

I doubt there will be more than one goal in it in either semi.

Perhaps Sweden should be slight favourites against Spain, if only because they hardly ever concede any goals. And seeing off USA and Japan should count for something. England vs Australia is far too close to call. From what I remember of the friendly, England's 15 attempts at goal didn't include many clear-cut chances and the Australian goals resulted from a rare error by Williamson and a deflected own-goal. At that stage, England were in a run of not scoring any goals from open play using their old 4-3-3 formation, and I think they're playing a bit better now, as they get used to the new approach. But as you say, it could easily be 1-0 either way.

I haven’t watched all the games but 75% fit Kerr has looked easily the most skilled player

There’s better players and England is probably a better team but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Matildas pull it off

Foord's a top player too. As you say, neither side winning would be a shock. The only surprise would be if it's by more than a couple of goals.

I think England start favourites because overall they have the slightly better players - and definitely more strength on the bench (which could be key).

They should look to dominate the midfield. In Walsh and Stanhope they have Barcelona and Bayern Munich v 2 players from the Scandinavian Leagues. Win that battle and they can prevent the ball even getting to the more dangerous Aussies.

It's about time someone stood up to the colonialists after they stomped all over a fellow member of the Commonwealth.

The only fair result after that outrage, which was frankly unsurprising given England's history, is a 7-0 drubbing with England reduced to 8 on the pitch on the stroke of halftime.
