In more good news, the Vics have built a commanding lead and this will take some chasing by the much vaunted NSW batting line up

Head should be captain.

Surprised Wade would even get a game over Inglis tbh. Didn't think he'd have any more international cricket left, this will probably be it.
"Thanks for the career Matty, here captain the most meaningless series in cricket history as a going away gift"

It did sound like he was third in line behind Harris and Renshaw and Renshaw's started his Shield season well as well so....fingers crossed?

I disagreed at the time several years ago with Jason Gillespie and Allan Border when they said that T20 internationals should only occur at WC's; now I totally agree with them. Just can't get interested in them at all these days

Congratulations once again to NSW for being the proverbial track mark of faeces on the g-string that is the Marsh Sheffield Shield.

Just looking at the upcoming schedule and it seems yet again Australia will go into the first test of the summer with very limited red ball cricket (none since Ashes)

ODI WC: finishes 19 Nov
T20i India: 23 Nov to 3 Dec
Test Pak: 14 Dec

The last shield round before BBL break is 28 Nov so this is the only chance for Test players to get a red ball game before 1st Test.

Warner, Smith and Head will be in India T20i so wont play any Shield (same with reserves Abbott & Inglis)

Khawaja and Lyon only Test players here for full shield (but only played 1 game so far)

Labuschagne, Green, Marsh, Carey, Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood should be available for last shield game 28 Nov but will they be rested instead?

Not sure where to put this, but what do people think should be the ODI side going forward?

I think Warner is retiring after this World Cup, I'll be surprised if Smith doesn't as well, Stoinis should go anyway and Maxwell probably won't make 2027. With the bowlers I'm skeptical of whether Starc and Hazlewood can make 2027 as well.

So a potential side could look like:

1. Head
2. Marsh
3. Labuschagne
4. Green
5. Inglis/Carey
6.
7.
8. Cummins
9.
10. Zampa
11.

Not sure who should bat 6/7. Do we have another lower-order hitter? The only one I can think of is Tim David. As for 6, some names that might come under consideration could include Short (although hasn't most of his recent form been when opening?), Renshaw, Turner and maybe McSweeney.

Bowlers I really have no idea. Johnson and Richardson look the most obvious but both have very fragile bodies. Morris's white ball form is pretty poor from memory. I think Ellis could make a claim for one spot, also Rogers and Thornton have good white ball form in recent years. Expect Sangha to play on spinnier wickets.

who are the non renshaw non warner non khawaja alternatives that you'd prefer
I want to look at an out of the box option. Like one of Cam Green or Mitch Marsh. I think if they are looking at getting both in the team one needs to open because having them at 5 and 6 is too samey.

Head would do a job but I don't want to move him from 5 he's been too effective there
