2023–24 Australian women's summer

Such a great contest. It sabotaged the plans I had for the morning
the rise of the wbbl has been such an awesome story and it’s been said before but for all their faults, CA has done a great job boosting the women’s game

partnering it with the men’s game at first but now really the women’s game is a force of its own and can stand by itself like the wbbl has here and it’s just awesome

Was talking about this with my wife this morning while we watched it. The way The Hundred does it has lots of pros for the women’s game but for weekday games does leave them playing in front of tiny crowds often. Giving them their own slot probably carries some downside but also a lot of focus? Crowd seemed good anyway

The one area where the women’s game has massive room for improvement is in fitness

The Australian scene is probably the most professional but it’s seriously lacking here and the rest of the world is generally worse

yeah so for us, cricket australia has spent years really building the womens game as a standalone thing with genuine top effort things. so it was a couple years ago the wbbl started slightly before but ran alongside a big part of the mens bbl, and what you'd get is, a lot of games would be wbbl 2-6ish and then the mens at 7 or so using the same stadium, and with your men's ticket you'd get free entry to the wbbl. stuff like that's super good because especially for the weekend games, really make a day of it and crucially the kids get engaged with the wbbl stars and get their favourites. further crucial to this was and is wbbl games on free to air tv.

added to this is, frankly, social media accounts for all the bbl teams really forced the wbbl down the throats of their audience too. that term is obviously pejorative when it's used generally, but i'm using it in a good way, to say, like, even when the wbbl was way waaaaay smaller, bbl socials for clubs would be posting just as much hype and coverage of wbbl stuff as the men's league, such that if you wanted to follow the sixers or thunder or whoever on facebook, like it or not you're going to be learning about their wbbl side as well, which, for most of the sport's fans who aren't raging ***ists but who'd otherwise give the women's game a miss, it really put it on the map for them too.

Darcie Brown seems to vary quite sharply between her good and bad days, but it looks like SA came up against one of her good ones today.

Sutherland's putting together a pretty impressive test record with the bat.

Not the most competitive game, this
I'm wondering where 499 sits in the list of all time first innings leads? Could be a pretty large innings win too. Not sure why SA have been so poor, there shouldn't be this much between the teams.

I think Kapp's absence has been huge for them, and once Wolvaardt fell for 4 in the first innings, there probably weren't too many names in the rest of that batting line-up that would have worried Australia.

Ouch - Wolvaardt out cheaply in the second innings too. This couldn't have gone much worse for SA.

I feel like the yawning gap between the two sides looks really obvious here. When was the last time Australia played a Test against a non-Big 3 nation? Everyone else has a handful of good players but a lot of girls that aren't quite up to it.

vs New Zealand, nearly 30 years ago, in a virtual washout with less than 8 overs of play.
