2020/21 New Zealand Domestic Season

I'm always surprised at the lack of chat/hype about Chapman on this thread. He hasn't done too well at the next level, but of all the next crop of batters, he's the one that's had the most chances for the BC's. I rate him, and I remember reading a really interesting article on him a few months ago - he owns a cricket gear company that makes all of the new arm guards that everyone is now wearing. I will try and find the article.

On another note, is anyone else seriously concerned about Ish Sodhi's bowling? Having watched the last few rounds of his bowling in PS the guy looks like he has zero idea where it's going. Way, way worse than the odd long hop that he usually bowls. Concerning for the big fan of spin in me.

Chapman is good... he's really good white ball cricketer. He got called in for black caps but as a bowler last year vs India  He should be given a go, bit of a long rope I'd think. He's not played enough to be judged yet IMO. With Conway and Young waiting in the wings can't see how he's going to get a go. He should be definitely tried in white ball cricket considering the WC is in India in couple of years time, he's a bloody good player of spin as well.

One issue I have with the Black Caps set up is that they barely ever make a change. It's the same XI going on and on and on. Sure it is producing results right now but there is no building of bench strength. Spare chances here and there for Phillips, Chapman, Mitchell, Tickener, etc but never on a consistent basis. I barely ever see a NZ A player given a go even when they go well. There's definitely gaps in white ball cricket.

You're probably right. Conway and Young will definitely be ahead - and they do look to be a class above. Speaking of a class above, Jamieson's picked up his third 5fa in as many games this season. He's a beast.

Sommerville approaching a land mark, two short of bowling 50 overs. That is a lot of overs for someone that's coming back from an injury at the end of the last season.

There was a lot of hype on him pre-Blackcaps debut to be fair.

You've just reminded it's almost the time of the year where I make my case for Santa yet again.

im enjoying chapmans hunger for runs in all formats. before he got bounced out of international t20 his red ball cricket was not fc standard despite him looking a very good one day player.

@ athlai - unless cole mcconchie is the worlds greatest skipper in waiting it looks like the selectors have a scheme in mind for either him or rippon, where they bat #8 and bowl 3 overs a day of token spin in home tests.

i think it's a silly strategy since jamieson will emerge at the end of the summer as the obvious right arm opening bowler and semi-responsible #8 but i think the selectors want mcconchie or rippon.

Aces should stop bowling Jamieson, he's bowled like 31 overs already. Give him a break, he's needed for the test series.

i see what you mean, but i remember watching kitchen is his 20s. he was balance and timing more than technique even then.
Actually now that I reflect back, I tend to agree with this. What initially made me gush over him look at him was moreso the "ease" he played with.

As someone who defended Sodhi in his formative years as I thought the amount of time and investment in him would reap rewards or see improvement or development in some way, I whole heartedly agree with this.

He's been bowling junk for a while now and if you look closely at when his wickets are, AND most importantly HOW he's getting them its no surprise he's absolutely no where near the red ball setup, I would even push to say he's below FC standard (red ball wise) especially. He's had to learn the hardest art in the most unforgiving arena, but there has been A LOT of time and investment and at this point he's there cause he's a do gooder and friendly "team player" IE doesnt' mind just being along for the ride.

Crikey, now you want Chapman in too. There's only 11 spots per version.
You will need to be more specific, what formats, and who you will drop to accommodate.

In the last year the blackcaps played (up to April 2020). They used 32 players in all formats. They played 36 games in all formats.
32 players in 36 games.
The blackcaps issue is definitely NOT that they don't give people an opportunity.

Expanding out to 2 years: in last 2 years they have used 36 players in 64 matches.

Chapman in white ball cricket I meant, they've heard my plea. They've picked him for T20s. I think he'll go well this time around. Looking in good touch and positive.

Ross the boss and Young batting now needing another 256 runs to win. Here's hoping Ross scores big and flexes up for WI.

Yes the New Zealand sports scene in the late '80s and early '90s was much more rife with Anglophilia than it is now (this is before China boomed and became our key trading partner).

Graeme Hick going great guns for an outfit that became the home of Anton Devcich and Scott Kuggeleijn does make me laugh, looking at it from a modern vantage point.

Young warming up with a reasonable knock so far. Another 130 runs to go with 6 wickets in hand. I think CD will get there.

Yeah, ND look like they're about to cop that 4th dig CD sucker-punch for the second time this season. Somewhere out there Peter Ingram is smiling proudly.
