Rippon seemed to be more effective bowling to Allen than Santner was at the Basin the other day. Quite an impressive effort by McClenaghan too (up to his last over anyway).

They could have tried Rippon in the powerplay but then you have to left handers at the top for firebirds. Would have been a serious gamble.

Couple more wins and I think Firebirds will book a final at home. Hope it comes in the next two games so that they can give some of our faster bowlers a break.

Also give some chance to the ones that are resting right now.

A powerful, talented ball striker without the defensive technique needed to succeed in long-form cricket. Good to know we’ve got Guptill’s replacement lines up.

I don't think too many young ones will be bothered about what format they play now and in future.

Long format takes lot of training, patience and heaps more virtues but it's not that appreciated.

First class isn't on tv super smash is. No one will remember first class scores but they will remember the super smash these days unless you're a cricket nut.

If I was Finn I'll take whatever format to play for Black caps. You'll never die of hunger if you're a good T20 player.

Recently Iain O'Brien was raising money to travel back to his missus in UK. He didn't have enough to travel. He was a reasonably good rest cricketer.

Watched the firebirds bowling this morning and Sears bowled real well... You guys have written him off I see. Mark my words you'll be hoping he plays for Black Caps heaps in future. Not sure why he only bowled 2 overs..

Very pleasing to see the young ones do so well. Clarke, Field, Llew Johnson, Boyle, Clarkson and few more also doing fairly well. Some of these guys are doing better than seasoned campaigners. Really good to see.

Not sure why Nathan Smith isn't playing for Otago. Surely he's got to be one of the first picks for Otago.

I believe Smith was injured, probably still hasn't recovered.

Razor was taken to cleaners by Finn yesterday. That was some hitting. The best of the shots was over extra covers for a six. Time to make a montage of Finn Allen's batting in the super smash. Every ball will be a highlight and it will be a pretty big highlights package for T20s.

It's time for Otago to bring in Nathan Smith and Josh Finnie. Josh Finnie is a very good striker of the ball but bats way down the order. They should slot him at the top of the order and give him full license to go for it. He won't be far off Finn Allen.

Firebirds have two very explosive batters at the top in Allen and Ravindra. Conway is solid as a rock, Blundell can also play a knock like Conway, Neesham, Bracewell and Gibson send the ball a mile. Not sure why other teams are not following similar trend yet. Have three or four guys that go for hell for leather and have couple of guys that can bat through. It'll happen soon if they're not already thinking about it.

Good to see Finn Allen coming off.

Really, he should get a go in the NZ T20 team this summer, normally they would, as they throw kids into this format.

But as this is a year they seem to be taking IT20 seriously in the build up to the T20 world cup, I won't be surprised if they don't find the time, or space to slot him in, unless they seriously intend to take him to the world cup. It's time to commit rather than experiment I would have thought.

Part of me would like to see him get elevated and go.

Another part of me, the part that only values test cricket, wouldn't mind if he misses out for now. Alarm bells going off if a guy so promising gets elevated while still having huge holes in his game in other formats still to iron out. it's a recipe for making an international version of a Josh Finnie out of Finn Allen, which would be a huge waste.

Deep diving into Finn Allen's T20 stats. Very short so far ... Only 7 games.

As I'm often sceptical of some players impressive T20 stats (due to the tiny ground effect , especially CD players )

Yesterday, at University Oval, was his first small ground success. His success before that had been at the proper dimensioned grounds of Basin Reserve and Bay Oval. Had always failed at the postage stamps.

Hell, but even Uni Oval is #MCGsobig compared to the special needs grounds dotted through CDland.

Note. Yesterday's game at Uni Oval not yet loaded on this page:

Yes still very few T20s but can't quite remember anyone making as much impact as this guy at the top of the order barring Conway. Even Conway was not this impactful, he scored lots but not in this fashion.

I'm not saying he should be picked now for Black caps but if he goes likewise rest of the super smash they should think about him but knowing the setup they won't. They'll not risk not having Guppy. Guppy is a legend in white ball cricket for Black caps and deserves few more hits but he's now starting to compile runs even in T20s and not going hard out like he used to.

Not only Finn but there's also worker and Rutherford that are in very good touch at the moment.

If Conway and Kane are both going to be playing then you definitely can do with another mad hitter in the team to join Seifert and Phillips. That'll balance it out nicely.

We have 8 T20Is scheduled for the rest of the summer, should be plenty of opportunity to test and experiment with a few players really

I'm not saying he should be picked now for Black caps but he should be picked now for the Black caps.

It's a real shame that Milne and Ferguson are unavailable for this years super smash. Would be a great (and rare) opportunity to filter out the real prospects from the imposters. Hopefully at least Jamieson and Boult can get back in there soon enough and put some pressure on these young turks.

Yeah, can understand it a bit for the bowlers (Jamieson and Southee in particular have played 7 FC games already this season, and Boult had a heavy workload in the IPL) and KW (we want to be a bit careful with that hip of his), but there's absolutely no reason why Latham and Nicholls shouldn't be playing today.

Ball landed off the pitch and was called a no ball - never heard of that before, is it a new rule? Or does it just never come up.
