**2007 World Cup**

Papps

I think the way Papps is playing the One Day game in domestic cricket he could make it into the Black Caps for the world cup in 2007. Thats probably unlikely but he would make a great replacement for injured batsmen.

And once again I point out the sensible option - getting back to what this discussion was actually about.

Australia at this point must be favourites as they still have the best team and back up by quite some distance

However, NZ seem to be finding more than just their feet in ODI cricket. What they need however is one bad as strike bowler (AKA Bond) and I think one of their batsmen to get all prolific ala Crowe.

And if Harris plays at the next World Cup I will eat my cat. That is not a mistake by the way. :p

Domestic

Lookin at domestic level I can see a few bowlers recently who have performed well at the death thats what new zealand needs.

I believe I do generally take an objective view on things. In fact on most occasions, too objective. You'd see that by reading my previous posts (not only on this thread) I also agree the above is extremely subjective and I did mention I didn't really want slang English sport. I'm not sure my age should be a concern to you though.
Sorry mate i was refering to Scaly not you

Yes. But at the death in NZ on all these wobbly wickets? I will never forget Tuffey conceding about 20 runs in the last over to Chanderpaul to lose an ODI.

TUFFEYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

West Indies

I think west indies are gradually getting better and by 2007 I think would be a strong team especially at home but I dont think it will be enough to beat the likes of Aussie and New Zealand - it all depends on whos not injured and form i guess to.

As far as NZ are concerned, I would love to see McCullum improve his batting. That guy has so many damn shots and his ability to find runs is scary. He would also hurry up one or two or three of those "lumbering oafs" in our batting line up. How good to see him at # three? Oh yeah.

Mcullum

I think i would actually like to see him batting near the end to help us 2 victory. But i guess we do need a bit of boost in the top order

Yeah we do. That is why Hamish Marshall is sort of exciting. He may not have a great deal of shots (especially off spinners) BUT his ability to get the strike turning over is dang good.

Others like Papps, Vincent etc as well...

Scurry lads. One extra run each over. We-hell... :p

your reasoning behind NZ not performing in the big match situations is quite frankly the stupidest ive ever heard. this NZ side has been known to perform above their potential in both of the last 2 world cups
Im inclined to disagree. NZ have a history in many sports of winning the matches that dont count and losing the ones that do. So many times in various sports we have choked in the pressure situations, and looking at our current team im not convinced that they will be able to handle the pressure.

The only players I would have confidence in would be Fleming, Astle and possibly McCullum in the batting and Vettori, Cairns and Bond (providing hes still in one piece) in the bowling. Many of our other players i do not think have the experience and level-headedness (if thats a word) to cope. Kyle Mills showed that he couldnt handle the pressure of a normal ODI series, imagine what he would be like in a World Cup final

LOL!

Is that the way you conduct yourself in the 'real world'? When someone disagrees with you, you 'block' them out. Pitiful.

except that what they do in other sports is irrelevant. face it NZ made the semi finals of both the 92 world cup and the 99 wc with fairly ordinary teams when no one expected them too. and they won the icc championship trophy 2000 again when no one expected them too. the only other sport that i can think off where NZ are chokers is of course rugby.

to call us chokers in rugby is harsh,we win pretty much all our games, yes we havent won the world cup since the 80's but to much is placed on the world cup its not a true judge on how good a team is,as a team could build up for four years, win the world cup and then be crap again(england) nz is the best rugby nation because of consistancy after all the all blacks winning percentage is over 80%

Yes i know i was just making the point that NZ sportsmen in general seem to lack the killer instinct in the big games. Our problem is that even when we appear to be in superb form a big collapse is never far away

NZ has clearly the best team in rugby, and really has had the best team for god knows how long. yet they havent won a wc since 87. IMO NZ not winning a wc since 87 is equivalent to SA not winning a world cup in cricket.

in ODI cricket they certainly did, so much so that in fact between 96 and 00 they had a record of 14-9 against australia. a classic example of their chokin was in the C&u series in 98, they were by far the best team in the tournament, won the first final, hammered australia in the preliminary stages and still lost the next 2 finals.

But doing it in a domestic game in front of 3 men and a dog is slightly less pressured than at the end of an ODI.
