2000s debutant test XI

Cook himself was definitely no superstar in seaming conditions but I just can't look past Sehwag's record in countries where the ball moves laterally when Cook ploughed out a solid average over a large sample opening in England and was very productive in conditions where Sehwag excelled.

Additionally, England pitches are not the easiest for batting while as far as UAE is concerned, they have really nothing much for pacers.

Has Rizwan done enough to be the keeper now? With his batting output and range of gears when batting, he may have eclipsed Watling and he is obviously a much better keeping option than Sanga, AB, and Pant.

Maybe we need to separate the 2000's debutants from the 2010's ..

2010's debut test XI ?

1.Usman Khawaja
2.Joe Root
3.Kane Williamson
4.Steve Smith
5.Virat Kohli
6.Ravindra Jadeja
7.Mohammad Rizwan (WK)
8.Ravi Ashwin
9.Pat Cummins
10.Kagiso Rabada
11.Jasprit Bumrah

Other than maybe Pant for Rizwan and Stokes for Jadeja on seamer friendly pitches this team kinda picks itself. Only other dilemma is the batting order. Kohli is better at 4, Root at 5, Smith did well at 3 so the temptation is to open with Williamson.

Root opening is a ghastly idea based on his record at 3. Begrudgingly, you have to put Warner in there.

Root was actually originally an opener in his younger days pre England selection. Opened for a run of games with Cook too and was viewed as his long term partner and replacement. He didn't do as well opening so was sent back down to the middle order where he had been averaging 60+ at the time vs 40ish opening.

Changing to Jadeja over Stokes as De Villiers allows him to bat 7 and the pace trio is good enough to not require another seamer.

Seems a perfect side. Cook and Smith both balanced and all conditions opener. Sehwag's problem is sadly, those 20 odd averages. If it was in 30s, it could have been a pass for an aggressive opener who is a game changer when clicks.

Sangakkara, Smith and Root are the three best middle order batsman to debut in this millennium while de Villiers is also very close and a fine glovesman.

Jadeja in tests is arguably better all rounder than Stokes, Ashwin the best spinner and the three best pacers has to be between Steyn, Cummins, Bumrah and Anderson.

Watling for AB and Younis Khan for Root. Also there are question marks about Cook especially as he was poor against left armers.

Should also include Rabada in the list for the best pacers. However, I would go for Steyn, Bumrah and Cummins as well in the team.
