Dravid was ready to open in 2011 UK tour but not sure if Sachin refused to open, it's a rumour maybe.
Dravid was an established team member by then. If anything it's even more amazing that he kept agreeing to do it despite having the ability long before that to just refuse. And Sachin opening would be a stupid idea anyway.

Yeah but they both were set batsmen with 100+ tests in the bag who were guaranteed selection. Laxman was tried and dropped for less than 5 tests earlier iirc when he was told he was selected for India as an opener. He refused the gig straight up and said he'd wait for a middle order slot. That takes ridiculous confidence in your ability to get selected in the future.

Ravi Shastri said that he considers Bhuvwnesh a LO specialist moving forward.
Pisses me off. He averages 26 with the ball and a respectable 22 with the bat. Almost every test he played he contributed something noteworthy. Just ****ing ridiculous to call him an loi specialist.

This gets to me as well. I understand that India did extremely well with Bumrah,Shami and a rejuvenated Ishant, but I don't think there is another cricketer who offers the same package Bhuvi does. And I'm not even advocating for him playing in this match or series, I just think that the thinking is wrong.

When did Bhuvi get dropped? He's been in and out mostly due to injuries more than anything. I assume he'll be back in the squad once fully fit.

But yes it's weird why he keeps getting dropped from Tests and picked for LOIs instead of vice versa.

As Teja said, Shastri was asked a year or so back why Bhuvi wasnt being selected and he flat out said that in his eyes Bhuvi is not a test player and would only play ODI/t20 going forward. Maybe they'll pick him when we tour England I dont know.

Ffs Shastri is awful. I mean, clearly he does a good job of managing a team of superstars, but him and Kohli make a lot of questionable calls.

Who knows, maybe it was Bhuvi who wanted to focus on white-ball stuff and Shastri was just backing him.

Has the ship sailed on Dhawan in tests? Struggle to believe he'd have done worse than Shaw.
I was assuming he was injured or otherwise unavailable.
I see hasn't played since the 2018 series in England. Averaging 20 was not great, but doing so as an opener, facing Anderson, Broad, Woakes & Curran in English conditions, is hardly a reason to kick him out for good.

Whatever it takes!!!
I know Virat/Ravi have a bizarre selection policy and have made so total blunders (Dropping Bhuvi in SA immediately stands out). But is opening with a completely out-of-form batsman in a pink ball test, also with a glaring technical weakness, the worst of them all?

Are you talking about the duo that began the Adelaide test in 2014 dropping Ashwin for a FC hack spinner just because he happens to bowl wrist spin, and then lost the test to the Aussie offie by 40 runs or so, which also could have been scored by Ashwin?

Reg. the discussion around Bhuvi, Shaz said that Kuldeep was the #1 spinner in overseas tests in a drunken rant after we won the series last time in Australia. I wont pay too much attention to what he says as he has shown he can often go back on his words. I think we will see Bhuvi in the frame if we make it to the WTC final and/or in the England tour that follows, for us.

Very pleased with Umesh. He wasted the new ball but was far more skiddy and threatening later on. If he can bowl fuller, he and Shami should bowl first because they've both got natural away-swing. Bumrah not so much (but he could do with a fuller length too) so a slightly older ball shouldn't hurt him. All three can definitely bowl better than this, which is great news for us.

No fan of Shastri and I think India would be better off after the end of his contract in 2021 moving on from him but you can't totally blame him for his views on Bhuvi. Bhuvi is perennially injured - his hamstring is problematic. Any coach would be a bit wary about selecting a bowler for tests based on his lack of fitness. If Bhuvi is fit for the forthcoming England tour and India don't pick him then that would be something to hold against Shastri.

Dhawan is rubbish in tests and is 35 now. India should give KL Rahul another chance because he has underachieved relative to his talent but if he flops this time, look at a new bloke like Abhimanuy Easwaran for the home series against England.

Yup Bhuvi's bowling isn't suited to Australia but if he is fully fit, he has to be picked for England.

Second dig specialist and future test captain Travis head to make 220* of 300 to guide aus home, then replace the test team with SA grade cricketers. Kohli won't know what hit him when he gets Oakley'd
