So much for NZ freeing up. Guptill stuck on his crease tentatively that whole innings allowing Indian openers to bowl at him.
NZ were never going to "free up" today. They ditched the Munro approach last week.

Edit, and also went to defensive mode with the ball last week, e.g. opening with Santa and Southee. I think spooked by playing better teams.

Gup looks a bit shot. Sad to see.
Looks like he doesn't know what his role is.

It is a very bizarre coaching/captaincy directive, at least from the outside. It really doesn't look as if many of them know what they're supposed to be doing.

Good bowling.

I don't know what's got into Guptill's head.

Possibly doesn't help having Nicholls at the other end, which is why Munro was there I suppose. Take a bit of pressure off, supposedly.
TBF he was really up against it opening in these conditions. Obviously you don't make decisions at the toss based on one or two players but asking a lot of your out-of-form openers to back it up.

yeah i agree. guptill looks like he's playing for his spot and cracking, rather than a guy with a billion runs given a licence to smash.

he should be told every game to guptill smash

Christ Guptill, so tentative. Learnt nothing from his last 8 bats.

And yeah, that catch was pretty simple as far as slip catches go, nice height, slightly to one side, if you're dropping that at international level your a mug.

So what are we doing with Guptill after the WC? Is he worth keeping around or do we start preparing for 2023?

? it's a really flat pitch.

I get the carry is good and there's a touch of movement but run-scoring should be really easy on a pitch like this. Looks like it's coming onto the bat beautifully.

This is ODI cricket.

Gotta find a way to get the bowlers off their lengths.

Guptill's been an awesome ODI player throughout his career and his overall WC record looks fine too thanks largely to him slamming that double against the West Indies, but against top-7 teams across three World Cups now his record is abysmal.

One of those two fifties was against Sri Lanka in this WC too -- hardly a scary opening bowling combination, and they were chasing about 130 too.

I don't think he's choking under pressure or anything like that (double ton against the West Indies being a good example of that - it was against a poor side but a very important game), but I think it says something for my theory that Test bowlers so often being rested from JAMODIs can create a bit of a different game entirely for openers to what happens in the World Cup proper now.

It's going to look flat when India bat on it..

Bit early to be talking about this right? Anyway, wouldn't be dropping him and quite confident he'll make it to 2023.
