Selectors Unravel Dauth Mystery
Following the reaction amongst the fans and media to the non-selection of
Red batsman Robert J. Dauth for the Cricket Web 'A' party touring the
Caribbean, the selection panel (at present, actively Neil Pickup, Andrew
Garven and Chairman Liam Camps) have felt the need to outline the reasoning
behind their final decisions.
Following the dis-harmony that struck the recent 'A' tour of the
sub-continent, it was felt that playing ability should not be the only
consideration in gaining International recognition, and that attitude also
played a critical part. Following Dauth's much-publicised off-field spats
with Green all-rounder and 'A' tourist Tarick Weber, the panel believed
that, whilst the Red batsman's talent was not in question, whether he would
prove to be mentally or emotionally capable of handling representative
cricket at 'A' team level - or acting as an appropriate role model - was
another issue.
The door is not shut for Dauth. The selectors still believe he has a future
playing at the very highest level for the country, however they hope that
this decision will aid his maturing into a better player and a better
person.
When asked about the decision to only take one specialist wicketkeeper, the
board felt that there were no other wicketkeepers whose form with either bat
or gloves had been strong enough to justify omitting another selection.
