    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

This Wisden list has generated enough debate in the last 3-4 years and there is no way a list like that can be compiled without it being questioned by many.I think only Bradman and Sobers probably cannot be touched but everyone else's position can be questioned. English fans and other would say...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

I meant as close to perfection as I have seen. I think Gavaskar did not preform equally well as his previous performances, when the WI attack peaked...and Amarnath did very well against those very attacks. I still can't forget the 1982-83 series against WI and a Imran inspired Pakistan in 1983...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

That's so true. And he played the very best in those Packer years. I think Lilllee in his autobiography mentioned that Barry Richards and Viv Richards took batting to an "unearthly plane" in the world series.

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Gavaskar was a technically perfect batsman and like I said the best opener I have seen, but he was not the type of player who could win matches by his sheer brilliance all too often. He could stall it most of the time and not let the opposition win it either, and that's one of the reason why...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

That was in a period of only three years, and you do realise that world cricket was seriously lopsided in those years due to the Packer series and most teams were short of their best players in those years.

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

When was he averaging around 70 ? He alonwith Zaheer and Mudassar murdered the Indian bowling in 4 test series played between 1978 and 1984, but he was not really going at the same speed against any of the other attacks at that time.

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Have you seen Richards play ? Or Gavaskar play for that matter ? Gavaskar was more sound technically then any other batsman I have seen and probably the best opener in post-war cricket(Barry Richards didn't play too many test matches), but I think you will agree that a batsman can be...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Yep, I have seen Jayasuriya from the start of his career. And please check that I did not say Sehwag is "THE" most dangerous cutter of the ball... I said "one of the most", which I thought, does not exclude batsman like Jayasuriya.

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

For me Viv Richards is the greatest batsman. I cannot think of anyone else to compare with him. He had no real weaknesses and had the attitude of a king when he went to bat. Bowlers would pretty much lose the plot, the moment he came in to the crease. He would play very unconventional looking...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

hmmm... you watched him in 1985/86 in Australia ?....did you turn off the TV when he took 8/106 in Adelaide ? :p and yeah, McDermott also bowled in that same innings.....and you saw him around 1989/90 ? ....but again your TV was probably up for repairs when he took 6/84 against WI at Sabina...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Then how come Lilee and Pascoe and others could not destroy the Indian batting on that same pitch and win the match......and I am using that MCG test as just one random example...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Yeah, right !! 8-) 8-) I have seen all of those bowlers except McKenzie and I don't think any of those measure up to Kapil. Look at the consistency of Kapil and look at Srinath's for example...Srinath was a "on his day..." type of bowler and quite ordinary at other times.Same goes for...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Well, do you mean to see that Kapil Dev was worse then Craig McDermott, Graham McKenzie, Vaas, Srinath, Andy Caddick and all those other bowlers that are in that list of top 50 wicket takers ? Give me a break !! A bowler who bowled mostly on lifeless Indian wickets and still managed to get 400...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

The shoulder thing happened after the India series and so for all practical purposes Warne played that series being at his best. Look no one is saying Warne isn't good. He is brilliant. But does he deserve to be on that list of 5 is what is being debated here.
  15. aussie_beater

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

yes so you could argue that the 1998 series in India was too taxing for him physically and mentally too as Warne has admitted himself, but when he started out on that series he was perfectly alright and at his best.

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Anil Kumble and Mushtaq Ahmed have played most of their cricket in the last 15 years and there is no way you can't call them decent leggies.Yes Kumble is an unconventional leggie but he is still a leggie nonetheless, and IMO Mushtaq in his prime was a brilliant leggie.

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

    And why is that ?
  18. aussie_beater

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Wrong. His debut series was in Australia and not in India. It was against India and he was smashed around by the likes of Ravi Shastri and Sachin as well. Just one month before coming to India in that series in 1998, Warne was good enough to be the highest wicket taker(20 wickets) versus South...

    Wisden's Cricketers of the Century

Well if you compare the "who inspired more" numbers, I think Sachin can beat anybody hands down in any age of cricket. A whole generation of cricketers have come up in the sub continent with Sachin as their idol. Now if you say the numbers in the sub-continent don't really count, then we can...

Zimbabwean Cricket: Time for The End

I would disagree there. Yes, the ZCU is acting arbitrarily but if the Zimbabwe board feels that a certain player(in this case Heath Streak) is making unreasonable demands, I don't think ICC or anyone else has a right to stop the ZCU from taking actions against him. Now you can argue that the...
