.... Sorry for random typos and incorrect corrections. On my crappy android

Top ten greatest bowlers and batsmen of all time

Averaging 43 in the second half of the 80s when past your prime doesn't disqualify anyone. Statistically batting the 80s was about 10% less prolific across the board as it was in the 00s and I personally believe this represents (broadly) levels of difficulty. I'm just about to remember an era...

The best after the Don? CW ranked 25 contenders, here is the countdown thread

... just as an add on, I remember rumours circlulsting that he was close to quitting in about 2004 with his continuing elbow trouble. Even if he'd retired then he'd have been a great. But a different kind of great than he ended up.

I agree to an extent. But he was a different kind of batsman in 2013 than he was in 1998. People (specifically younger people) will recall him as the very competent and technically proficient accumulator he ended up as, not the Bradman-esq dasher of his mid 20s.

I think Dravid was true opening batsman and would perhaps be rated even higher if he was permanantly employed as one

Australia post-2000 Hayden Warner Ponting Smith Clarke Hussey Gilchrist Warne Harris Johnson McGrath This line up is demented. I’d personally risk Johnson in there as I think you’d see more shine than rain with those players around him. Compare England post-2000 Cook Vaughan Mr...

Good player, Langer. Wished he was English

Top ten greatest bowlers and batsmen of all time

Averaging 43 across a number of years at the back end of your career isn't bad. Not in the 1980s. That probably converts to an average of 48 today. Which isn't shoddy. Viv's Century conversation rate isn't in the top echelon compared to the more statistically ruthless of the greats. But he's...

Viv versus SRT is going to stir up strong opinions. Personally I'm not sure who's best, I edge microscopically to Viv. But in certain situations I'd still take the little Indian maestro. For me Tendulkar is a top of the range Mercedes with a spanking build quality and attention to detail. Even...

Agreed. I think he'll manage it though. I reckon he has 10 years in him.

Tendulkar at 4 is probably fair. No disgrace coming marginally behind Richards and Sobers (I presume).

Root has the potential to be our greatest ever batsman. And I think he will

Viv's strike rate was obscene for the era. His strike rate intrigues me even more than his impressive average. A SR of 50 was brisk, and 55 positively rapid. 68 was lunacy.

My Granddad reckons the best batsman he ever saw was Sobers, quickly followed by Viv Ricards and Lara. He was old enough to recall Bradman but never saw him in the flesh, or even an a TV set til after his the Don's retirement.

    The Cook Report

An opener who consistently gets out in the first few overs is opening the floodgates to disaster. There are intangibles beyond the raw data. They boost the opposition, destroy morale in their own team. Expose middle order stroke makers to the new ball, etc. Cricket is a very psychological game.

    The Cook Report

Agreed. Albeit better than Strauss. Tresco remains an enigma. I actually rated him pretty highly. All 3 have/had limitations though
