Problem is, all our backup options besides Curran are potential injury problems. Archer not 100% and Stone is just always a concern. Bring in Porter I say

    1st Test, Edgbaston, Birmingham

Needless to say we need a massive effort from Broads in the first innings without Anderson. Potential for Ali to have more influence in the 2nd but can't afford for them to get 300+ I feel. Smith looking ominous as well

He left that to look after his wife iirc.

    1st Test, Edgbaston, Birmingham

On test form actually, I think Moeen has done more than enough with his bowling. Even away from home in Sri Lanka and West Indies he did quite well. I still think Leach is probably the better spinner of the two, but I definitely think Moeen deserves his place as a bowler alone. At no.9 I think...

Weirder still is neither of them are the best wicket-keeper in the country

Rory Burns to be top run scorer It's not going to happen but I'll look like a genius if it does

    1st Test, Edgbaston, Birmingham

England team has been announced for the first test. Burns Roy Root Denly Butler Stokes Bairstow Woakes Ali Broad Anderson What I and probably everyone expected. Would have liked to have seen Jofra but I think he'll do well for a bit more of a rest. Additionally, I think him and Anderson...

    1st Test, Edgbaston, Birmingham

I think Denly has been told he is gonna bat at 4 apparently. I don't think it solves much, if anything at all tbh. We're gonna lose 3 quick wickets either way.

More long-term then Denly at least :)

    1st Test, Edgbaston, Birmingham

So Root's gonna bat at 3 apparently, which probably means that Denly drops down to 4. Can't help but feel that it would be worth putting Roy at 4 and Denly in to open though. Denly is an experienced and in form opener in county cricket and hasn't necessarily looked clueless at no.3. Conversely...

Name A Cricketer (Ex or Current) You Can't Bear To Watch or Hear

This might be unpopular but Sunil Gavaskar. There's been multiple occasions (I think back to the SA vs India test when they went off for a supposedly dangerous pitch) where he has just come off as really whiny and of the mindset that things are sort of unfairly up against his team. He's sort of...

England's focus going forward/how to fix our test match issues

Yeah good point about Williamson, and tbh no one really knows how long/how short careers end up being. It all depends on small factors that become more visible towards the end rather than in the middle of their careers, while high workloads can definitely make you worry about the longevity...

England's focus going forward/how to fix our test match issues

Butler at 6 and Stokes at 5 imo, though I think those two are sort of inter changeable in those positions. Got a feeling that Butler is going to develop into quite a decent middle order batsmen in test cricket

England's focus going forward/how to fix our test match issues

The funny thing is, Root's conversion issue has quietly disappeared this year. Pretty sure his last three 50+ scores have been converted to 100s. The problem is that the first of those 50+ scores came all the way back in the last test against India last summer. I don't think it's been a matter...

    **Official** Ireland in England 2019

Shame that it ended that way for Ireland tbh. Outplaying us in the previous two days only to collapse like that is disappointing. All a learning curve of course. As far as victory goes, it's probably the least of ways that England would have liked to win. None of the top 3 scored runs (though I...

    ***Official*** County Cricket 2019

Quite unfortunate that Malan hasn't really had any T20I opportunities for England since that tri-series against Aus and NZ. Often flys under the radar but is pretty great in the format Depending on what happens in the Hales situation, could see him making the squad for the next t20 WC

    ****Official****NZ condolences thread

Problem is, you could then also say that it doesn't matter how many wickets the team lost, just so long as they actually levelled the target score. Would result in the same sort of arguments. The best solution would have just been super overs with different bowlers/batters until either team wins...

    **Official** Ireland in England 2019

I think it's worth trying to get Moeen into form with the bat though. With a vulnerable (to say the least) 1 - 3 runs down the order could be vital. Ali has 5 test centuries, so to get him into some form with the bat before the Ashes could be very significant. .
