    ICC Ratings

As you say a player's early career has a disproportionate effect on their average rating, so I prefer to look at Tests ranked above 700/800/whatever. This site tries to make the average fairer by taking a weighted average.

    Novelty XIs Compendium

I assume that aged 50 plus days doesn't count; otherwise Sutcliffe would be eligible (and Bestwick to bolster the pace bowling).

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

On alt.sport.cricket, there was a big Sobers fan (he called himself "Steve the Bajan") who wrote this about Sobers in 2000: "Sobers' bowling average was in the mid-40s until he started bowling pace under Worrell. I published a long analysis on rsc a few years back that indicated that Sobers, as...

TWO YEARS BEFORE AND ONE YEAR LATER

It was 1978-9 - he scored about 580 in a 3-match series (the record until Gooch's 750 against India in 1990).

TWO YEARS BEFORE AND ONE YEAR LATER

I had a go at April 1973: Geoff Boycott Dennis Amiss (had a good series in WI in 1974) Ian Chappell Lawrence Rowe (also did well in that series v England) Zaheer Abbas Tony Greig Alan Knott Keith Boyce Dennis Lillee John Snow Lance Gibbs Checking the figures: Glenn Turner (1486@61.91) should...

TWO YEARS BEFORE AND ONE YEAR LATER

Greenidge (1510@47.18) and Redpath (1047@47.59) are fair choices, as would be Edrich (908@47.78), Gavaskar (1417@45.70) and Fredericks (2051@44.58). Boycott averaged 147.33 in the 1977 Ashes, but those were the only 3 Tests he played in the 3 years. Richards (2438@56.69) and Chappell...

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Was looking at the 1978-9 India v WI series and noticed that Gavaskar scored nearly all his 732 runs in the odd (1st, 3rd & 5th) Tests (even though India scored 644-7 in the 6th Test). It turns out that he has the record for the difference between "odd runs" and "even runs", even if 3- and...
