The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

The West Indies in 1957 had Worrell, Weekes, Walcott, Sobers and Kanhai. Their scores in the series were 474, 72-7, 127, 261, 372, 367, 142, 132, 89, 86. Even in the 367, they were 89-5 and were rescued by Smith, Atkinson and Goddard.

Ignoring current players: BA Richards KJ Arnott JWH Makepeace BL Irvine L Ronchi Abdul Kadir BA Barnett+ GF Bissett R Pollard W Brearley T Greenhough You can probably improve this team but I don't think you're going to get a great XI.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

If Barnes/O'Reilly is barred as the pair of spinners, I'd probably go for Ashwin/Underwood, though I guess you might be excluding players for whom the numbers are likely to change. I think I've looked before at the best XI who *all* played the same number of Tests: currently the most...

If you regard Barnes as a spinner you could pick Barnes and O’Reilly.

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Just tidying up the previous version: time is now in years + days, and is from start of the first Test to end of the last Test in the side: Longest spell in a Test side (without missing any matches - time given is between start of first and last Tests in the spell): 21y312d: AW Nourse* 19y267d...

    Vikram Solanki and Owais Shah

I'm not sure what the very poor selection decisions were*: in the second half of the 00s, the England batting line-up was usually 5 or 6 from Strauss, Trescothick, Cook, Vaughan, Bell, Pietersen and Collingwood, all of whom had pretty successful careers (and would walk into the team now). Key...

Raw Pace but Sprays It All Over

Patrick Patterson, at least early in his career: from Graeme Fowler's book "Fox on the Run" (about matches from 1984 and 1985): "He has no idea where it is going when he lets it go, so he wasn't able to fire it into the blockhole." "Patto ... slipped - presumably - and this ball came flying...

    CW's Ranking of WicketKeeper-Batsmen (Tests)

Charles Davis's article on the "46-ball hundred": "On a similar subject, here are some notes I have made on the claim by Farouk Engineer that he scored a century off 46 (or 48) balls at Chennai in 1966/67. Engineer was 94 not out at lunch on the first day, and claims to have hit a six off the...

    CW's Ranking of All-Rounders (Tests)

Gregory's Test career was like Botham's in miniature: in his first year (13 Tests) his averages were 48 & 24; after that, in his last 11 Tests, they were 25 & 45.

    CW's Ranking of WicketKeeper-Batsmen (Tests)

Don't think Prior was ever a batsman in the way that Stewart and Flower were - he was picked as wicket-keeper for Sussex from his first FC season.

Yes. I've re-labelled it "most gaps in a Test career" (and subtracted 1 from each of the numbers) as I think that's clearer.

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

A record that it's no surprise to see is held by James Anderson: Most gaps in a Test career (i.e. most runs of consecutive Tests missed between a player's first and last Tests): 25: JM Anderson (Eng) 21: JB Statham (Eng) 20: Harbhajan Singh (Ind) 19: I Sharma (Ind) 18: S Chanderpaul (WI), Z Khan...

    Books on 1972 Ashes?

Owen-Thomas was the Cricket Writers' Club Young Cricketer of the Year in 1972 - not one of their more far-sighted choices, but not too surprising that Arlott tipped him. According to Wikipedia he became a solicitor but was struck off in 2008.
