    All-rounder XI vs Specialist XI

2+ wickets per Test rules out Kallis - maybe Faulkner could take his place?

    All-rounder XI vs Specialist XI

A proper specialist XI: Herbert Sutcliffe Bill Ponsford Eddie Paynter Peter May* Clem Hill Misbah-ul-Haq Herbert Strudwick+ Glenn McGrath Jasprit Bumrah Neil Adcock Bert Ironmonger None of the top 7 bowled a ball in Test cricket. The bottom 5 all have batting averages of under 8 (but excluding...

Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Sad news for fans of cricket stats: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/travis-basevi-the-architect-of-statsguru-and-one-of-cricinfo-s-pioneers-passes-away-1340918 . Also, on the subject of cricket stats: Charles Davis is doing less work now on his colossal Test Match Database, though it seems...

    Less talked about excellent players

He wasn't quite 40 for his last Test. Similarly, Rohan Kanhai averaged 47 but is overshadowed by so many other great WI middle-order batters.

    Ian Botham v Shaun Pollock

In fact of his first 3 full series against Australia (ignoring the one-off Test in 1980), the WSC series was his worst: 1978-9: 291@29 and 23@24 1979-80: 187@37 and 19@19 1981: 399@36 and 34@20 He did cash in against Pakistan in 1978, though: 212@70 and 13@16.

    Ian Botham v Shaun Pollock

And, to be fair to him, walking from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for charity (when you've already had back injuries) is probably not ideal training.

Top 5 test allrounders of the last 30 years.

Curiously, both of Pollock's Test hundreds were scored while batting at #9. His average when batting at #7 was a respectable 32, about the same as that of Dhoni (30), Kapil (31), Hadlee (32), Flintoff (32), Dujon (33) and Imran (34).

Who is England's Greatest Left Arm Spinner?

Verity’s average was 14.90, the lowest for any bowler with 1000 wickets since 1900, so I don’t think it’s that clear-cut.

Who is the worst player of all time that would be selected in every XI in history?

Cowdrey's final series recall was 3 years before WSC (and was due to Amiss and Edrich getting injured) - are you thinking of Bob Simpson?

Who is the worst player of all time that would be selected in every XI in history?

In Harvey's first Test the Aus top 6 was Barnes, Morris, Bradman, Hassett, Miller, Harvey.

    Kapil Dev vs Ian Botham

Also Ben Hollioake, who was about the only whose figures were worse than those of 1987-1992 Botham . I don't think Tudor was picked as a prospective all-rounder - apart from his 99* as nightwatchman he never batted higher than 8 (and his batting average outside that Test was also 8). Cork was...

    Kapil Dev vs Ian Botham

Botham's averages in his last 5 years were 20.4 and 55.6. The other pseudo-all-rounders (i.e. bowlers who the selectors may have hoped would score a few runs) in that 5-year spell were: Phil Newport: 27.50, 41.70 Chris Lewis: 26.64, 35.61 Derek Pringle: 13.33, 34.86 Philip DeFreitas: 11.86...

Best players who were not given enough chances by the management

Kambli averaged 113.28 in his first 7 Tests, and 14.70 in his last 7.

Kapil Dev vs Shakib Al Hasan

The Australian squad in India in 1979-80 wasn't just missing Chappell, it's a WSC-free squad (it's pretty much the same players as had played against England and Pakistan several months before).

    Most first class wickets ever

There's also Fred Titmus and Tony Lock (and the rest weren't all inter-war either); but it's curious that numbers 2-7 (Tich Freeman, Charlie Parker, Jack (JT) Hearne, Tom Goddard, Alec Kennedy and Derek Shackleton) only played about 50 Tests between them.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

What happened there was I'd started with a "under 45" team, and had Worrell as captain; then decided "under 40" made more sense, so replaced Worrell (and Marshall), and without thinking left Worrell's replacement as captain.

A Genius of the game - Martin Crowe

Saying that he "invented" pinch-hitting openers is a stretch: Botham opened for England several times in 1983 (and I bet it'd been tried before that). He even did so in the 1992 World Cup before Greatbatch (though without much success).

    Kallis v Sangakkara

How about 11 Sobers? At least they'd have a bit of bowling variety.
