On the bright side, Kallis can have a proper lie-down to prepare for his upcoming 5fer.

    Pietersen V Smith

The OP refers to batting in pressure situations. Captaincy adds pressure, and I doubt that off field ego stroking outweighs it.

Fair enough. Only throwing out Sydney 09 because he played w/ a broken finger in the 2nd innings. Point is more that averages based on two or so series have huge errors.

Hence "all else equal." Would Smith's batting improve w/o the burden of captaincy?

Added responsibility makes batting well harder. So, ceteris paribus, the guy w/ the captaincy takes it.

Half of those were as a brash captain of a team that was over-hyped. Also, if you discard the 09 Sydney match, he averages 38 with a se of 9. The pressure of captaincy surely adds another plus in Smith's column? Edit: Over-hyped given the opposition in 05/06

$225m base price for two new IPL franchises

Agree re basketball, and the reduction to Olympic games is ultra extreme. The takeover would have to be incentive compatible, at least initially. Later on, there may no longer be a grim Nash strategy for the boards to use. For example, could the IPL start owning "feeder teams" in foreign...

$225m base price for two new IPL franchises

What's the likelihood of international games being reduced to A-teams at the Olympics (cf US' basketball), at the extreme? Money talks quite loudly.

$225m base price for two new IPL franchises

Withing 10-20 years: 30 teams (one of which to be based in Bangladesh), 162 games/team/season/year + a postseason, and the final to be called the World Series.

Yes, but if the wicket had nothing in it for spin, it would've been hard to take 20 w/o Steyn.

Not discounting the possibility that Swann is a more than decent bowler, but was the decision not to risk Steyn a good move?
