Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current) - Updated

This is the updated version of the countdown I posted a while ago that ranked the top 30 test batsmen from the last 30 years. Before I move on to the top 30 bowlers, which will be a humongous task, I wanted to do some updates and fix some of the flaws in the methodology. The few updates I have...

    *Official* Second Test at Lord's - Aug 12-16 2021

Matches like this is why I believe test cricket is the greatest sport in the world. What a match! What a win! Gotta feel for Root though. Must be disheartening to put on such a stellar performance and end up in the losing side.

Name the 5 best innings of your favorite batsman in test cricket

I believe that not many would know a batsman better than their fans. So lets hear from them. If possible give a brief note on why those innings were special. I will start first, Rahul Dravid 1. 180 v Australia, Kolkata, 2001 Probably the greatest overshadowed innings ever. Coming in at no.6...

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current)

:) When I started this a few months back, I wasn't sure if I could finish. But after a few pauses I did finish it. The hardest part was devising a method without any major flaws. Since that is done, why not? May be a top 30 test bowlers or ODI batsmen. But not sure when I will find the time again.

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current)

Thank you all for your support. I know that there is no one methodology which can satisfy everyone. Despite that I believe all of us enjoyed this countdown. And the truth is, if I slightly tweak the formula Sachin could edge out Smith or Lara could edge out Waugh and so on. So in my mind the...

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current)

Yes, Zim in the 90s and even Ban in the late 00s were decent to good and are actually included in this exercise. But even that average is inflated by the extremely batting friendly era of 2010s. Once you adjust for that it may come to about 55. And after you remove Smith's couple of weak years...

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current)

Another important factor we are not considering here is that, 2000s was a very batsman friendly period. You would be surprised to know the difference in the average of batsmen in 00s and 10s. I just did a quick check, it comes to about 12% less in 10s. So unless we adjust the averages to the...

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current)

Smith vs Sachin can be an interesting discussion when we think about the different factors we have to consider. Plain batting average can be misleading sometimes and that is point of doing these exercises. For the period Ramdas mentioned if we exclude the record against minnows as I have done in...

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current)

Lara likely deserves to be no. 3 on the list. But it is a bit unusual for a batsman of his standards or anyone in the top 5 to have a low as he did in the late 90s. Over a 5 year period, (96-00) he averaged 40 odd and a mere 30 overseas. Otherwise he would have been a notch above Kallis and...

Top 30 batsmen of the modern era (1990s -Current)

Interesting question. I just did the math and for Smith to retain the spot he would have to score at least 127 points for the next 4-year period (2021-24). Which means a top 5-7 batsmen in that period. Seems like a cakewalk for a batsman who scored 160 & 190 in the previous 8 years, unless there...
