*Official* World Test Championship Final at The Oval – June 7–11, 2023

Watson completely changed his bowling after injury too. When he first played he was rapid but didn't move the ball off the straight and was ineffective. Later on he bowled medium fast and was better. Kind of like a poor man's Shaun Pollock.

England players and selection discussion thread

Hain is a quality player but there are no vacancies in the England middle order right now. Compton has done well but his average is padded by playing poor standard cricket in Zimbabwe. Coad (who plays for Yorkshire not Derbyshire) is just the latest in a long string of medium pacers who take...

Raw Pace but Sprays It All Over

I've just been re-reading Michael Atherton's autobiography. He felt that Malcolm was badly treated by some of the coaches and selectors, and it undermined his confidence. Whereas Chris Lewis for example was just impossible to captain effectively.

Stokes himself supposedly rags it miles when bowling offspin in the nets... Given that there may be four left-handers in the Aussie top order I would imagine selectors might prefer an off-spinner to another left arm orthodox spinner. But the cupboard is pretty bare. Really hope they don't go...

Seems to me there's also an obvious difference in fitness levels between the two sides. Pope and Duckett were still running lightning singles after scoring 150+. The Irish bowlers looked knackered by noon.

Now that's totally unfair. They were inside edges.

    *Official* England v Ireland Test

Duckett has scored 100 runs in the session, but I guess that doesn't officially count as scoring a century before lunch?

    *Official* England v Ireland Test

This is men vs boys. Or maybe slightly older boys vs boys. U17s vs U13s. Not really sure what we're learning other than that flat track bullies are going to prosper on flat tracks. Crawley's knock wasn't exactly confidence-inspiring. Broad and Potts looked steady but not terrifying. Tongue...

SCurran is a great T20 and limited over player for sure. I'm less convinced about him as a red ball cricketer, especially with the bat. Do you really want someone coming in at seven who only has one FC hundred to his name? He'd be the ideal person to send out when you're 450-5 and want quick...

I can see why Sam Curran isn't in the Test squad. If the qualification for being a Test all-rounder is that you have to be Test standard at one of the disciplines, does he make that cut? He's a fifth bowler who will make the occasional decent knock at number 8. And he definitely isn't quick if...
