    20 Greatest ODIs (by ESPNCricinfo)

Its the India v England tie at the 2011 World Cup today. It should be number 11, as that's what we're up to in the countdown, but is currently being called number 7 in the text (which I assume they will correct).

    Meaningless and stupid cricket statistics

I was about to mention Sutcliffe and Tate for 1924-25, but hadn't realised that Hobbs had also scored so many. Crazy that they lost that 4-1. 1986-87 is an interesting one, because remembering Chris Broad tonning up constantly it still feels strange that he wasn't the top runscorer. I think he...

Adam Gilchrist vs AB Devilliers vs. Sangakarra

    He averaged 40 as 'keeper.

In the 1981 Ashes series, Australia had the highest runscorer (Border), and the two highest wickettakers (Alderman and Lillee), and lost 3-1.

Which would you pick for a Test bowling all-rounder spot on a team?

It's a pretty special CW moment to have two posts so wilfully ignorant one after the other. We've been blessed.

I hate* to be that guy but Davidson has four 70+ scores. He made five Test half centuries in total, and one of them was an innings of 62. * I love to be that guy

Tendulkar's desert storm innings/match at number 12 today.

Players who went up or down in your judgement after going through their records

Harvey's average didn't really start to decline significantly until the second half of the 1950s. In the first half of the decade he was up and down against England but had three massive series against South Africa and West Indies, and was averaging over 61 coming into the 1956 Ashes tour. He...

Adjusting the batting average based on actual quality

    Also, how about Steve Waugh?

How does MoYo look on this? Test average over 52 and achieved an exceptionally high peak ICC rating, though I'm not sure what his average raring was.

Worst delivery to take a wicket

A rule that the Australian team followed to the letter, showing their integrity and respect for the game.

I'd have thought the opposite - that playing in such a dominant team meant he rarely needed to take his batting as seriously as he might have done otherwise.

Haha I'd assumed that if you told me the story it would have been with a PM rather than in the thread itself, but I'm very grateful. And so as not to derail the thread any further, I'll simply say that is glorious.

Fair enough, I remember another line from Hadlee somewhere where he talked about Line-Length-Lillee as his 3 Ls (though as I think about it there may have been a fourth L that I'm forgetting). Completely agree about Lillee though - notwithstanding who he was or wasn't better than, the number of...

Was this when he was speaking to Richie, talking about how Lillee was his hero and when times got tough he would ask himself WWLD (what would Lillee do)?

Otherwise mediocre players who were aesthetic af

It speaks volumes for Hooper's underachievement, given the immense talent he had, that his Test average of 36 is actually higher than I thought it was. And if he had scored just one additional run in any of his 227 50-over internationals, his career Test and ODI run aggregates would be identical.

Otherwise mediocre players who were aesthetic af

Yep, this was my first thought. He invariably seemed to make fewer runs than you thought he should have, but my God he looked good making them.

You've probably told this story already during one of my many absences, but I'd be fascinated to hear it. Actually, all of that sounds brilliant.
  19. The Sean

Which would you pick for a Test bowling all-rounder spot on a team?

Yep, in a team where the standard is good but not stratospheric and with those choices on offer, I'm prepared to accept a longer tail than I'd like if it means I get the player most likely to elevate my team to the next level and actually win more matches - and that's Macko.

A decent chunk. His dead-rubber average drops to a considerably lower but still high 65.63 without it.
