    I don't agree with the handling of Jimmy either. Moreso because I hate the idea of viewing every other test series as Ashes prep, but I agree with this point too. Age-related decline is extremely non-linear and uncertain, and they're behaving like it's something they can predict.

    Yeah if you cut Woakes now you're writing off any possibility of him playing in 2027. He's arguably England's best player at home and could easily make a contribution at age 38, especially if that's the focus and they can manage his load towards doing so.

    Nah Woakes will be 38 during the 2027 Ashes, recent history tells us he has a non-zero chance of being able to contribute at that age.

    Yeah I think the squad will be pretty good. It’s just that anything short of getting to the World Cup final will technically be a decline in results, so it’s a high bar. Something like a tough draw and a QF exit to a good team might be seen as a disaster.

    It’s tough to take over a team that’s just had a run of terrible performances but good results. Whoever steps in will take the blame for a decline in results that would have happened anyway.

    They had some decent pieces in 2014, particularly the core of the Rodgers Liverpool side minus Suarez. I get that that’s not exactly a small difference, but they had enough to be a bit better (and a lot more fun) than they were. Shoehorning Rooney in really held them back.

    Results are a bit deceiving I think. He did a reasonably good job for his first 3 tournaments, but a very poor one for his last. Should be looked back on as one of the better England managers, but it was definitely time to go.

    The RM mentality is real but the whole gameplan this year was dependent on opponents missing a load of easy chances. They were very much beatable and they'll still be beatable with Mbappe.

    It’s a good sport, but UK time zones make it hard to get really into. Definitely go to a game if you get the chance in the US. Though tbf I think I’d say that about all live sport.

    The fact that Liverpool were still in it was why I thought it was a mistake at the time. Taking a point is ~always a mistake in a 3-way title race.
