    ***Official*** English Football Season 2019-20

Daniele Rugani has coronavirus. Hard to imagine next week's CL fixtures are being played.

An Arsenal fan I know who watches a lot of you guys is always hyping him. Don't know if it's just that I'm more familiar with the names of the youth generation of 2015-18 than I was earlier ones but I feel like Arsenal never used to have this many ex academy players making really successful...

    ***Official*** English Football Season 2019-20

Jeff Reine-Adélaïde and Ismael Bennacer went to Lyon and Milan for a combined €40m last summer having been let go for basically nothing by Arsenal. Gnabry has performed better than my expectations for him four seasons in a row, but if you'd told me when he first broke into the Arsenal first team...

Yeah he'll be gone in the summer. Arsenal youth prospects have had an incredible habit of surpassing expectations after leaving the club in recent years (Gnabry actually isn't even top of the list IMO since he was very highly thought of) but it seems like he's committed career suicide. He had a...

I mean the innings really could've gone very differently if Healy was caught in the first over. Even if Mooney and Lanning built a big partnership it wouldn't have been at anything like the rate with which Healy batted. And a chase in the 140-150 region is just totally different.

Ok it really is like 2003.

The pitch is gripping and turning at least so they can probably pull things back somewhat if they get their act together quick.

First ball down the track and a boundary. Brendon McCullum could never.

    Controversial opinions

Root was probably the second best test batsman of the four for a decent while. But he averages 38 in tests in the last two years (equating 50 innings). Pretty simple and fair to say he's a way off the other three as of right now.

    Controversial opinions

Philander in helpful conditions would swing it a bit both ways, get lots of seam movement and a lot of bounce. Don't think there have been many bowlers in test history who have done those things at genuine pace. It's definitely the case if you ever do something as simple as driving drills in...

    Controversial opinions

My guess on this is that the skill level isn't equal in the comparisons we see in international cricket. I.e. the people we see who actually bowl those speeds effectively in international cricket can only do it because they're so skilful, while a lot more 135kph guys are able to survive despite...

Fairness has always been a secondary priority in football. Of course, one can very reasonably argue extra time and penalties are more exciting and dramatic than the potential for goals that swing a side from losing to winning and vice-versa anyway. No denying its existence is weird in a world...

Have always been an away goal ultra. The Zonal Marking podcast this week did a good job of highlighting the positives of it I thought.

It balances out the home advantage you'd get in extra time though. Apparently in Europe about 50% of ETs go to penalties, and about 25% are won by the home and away teams each. So there doesn't seem to be a big advantage for either with the current set up.

Yeah, I will happily admit I don't watch much lower league football. But do you really think my argument was based on an idea in my head that conference football only ever sees the ball played along the carpet? One of the main reasons I only ever play small side football in cages is the fact...
