Cant understand why anyone would not share my point of view, surely the idea is keeping a young student playing the guitar and not making it some almighty struggle, especially with all the distractions kids have these days, the guitar is easily dropped if its too much hard work. Rant over!

Actually, a good cheap steel string guitar isnt out of the question, or a 3/4 nylon string guitar, so long as its easy to play, I guess he is only 9 so you might not want an electric guitar just yet. I just hate seeing kids with crap guitars, no matter how good I teach or how much practice they do it can be all for nothing if the guitar is just a piece of crap.
Half size is probably too small. The only thing to think about is that a 9 year old will grow out of a 3/4 size guitar probably within a year, but a full size is too big right now. Also, it does depend which type of guitar you end up getting. Traditionally kids just get a nylon string guitar (classical type), and most shops will recommend this, I however do NOT! I get angry about this a lot. These days a cheap electric guitar not only is easier to play for kids, but obviously looks cooler, and is cooler. There's always a thing with people saying in the 'olden' days they learnt on a piece of crap guitar and it didnt do them any harm, well thats good but a hell of a lot of students dont want the struggle on a guitar thats hard to play, and these days guitar has a lot of competition- videos games etc. In the 60's,70's and 80's you just get a good cheap guitar that was anything but hard to play, you can now, which is great.
Howdy! No idea what the rate is in Sydney, I'm in Melbourne! The rates here vary from $25 to $37 for half an hour. Obviously $37 is crazy, especially for kids/teenagers. I charge $28, but will go to $30 in June, which is pretty much standard. Now the problem with kids is that some teachers are seriously crap at teaching them, I've seen some abysmal stuff. 9 years old is a good age, grade 4 yeah? Good age to start and not too young, no teacher would refuse at that age. I had a woman call me asking for lessons for her 3 year old THAT is young!
Yeah you'd love to get your greasy mitts on some delicious parmi, but ****ed if I'm going to give a **** like you the satisfaction of getting one pro bono.
Just been reading the Steyn V Lillee thread.

This forum is full of whingeing victim-mentality ****s, it's getting worse, I can't bear it
    Burgey,

Some of your recent posting has been unacceptable. This is because you're a ****.

    Thanks

Nope. Keen, but the girlfriend will be up visiting over the next couple of days; might find it a bit hard explaining to her the 21k+ posts I have on an internet forum, and that I want to meet people from there. Let me know though, cause she's only going to be here a few days.
Yeah, thanks a lot mate. Luckily the guy in question is a really top bloke and does want us all to know so it shouldn't be an issue. Cheers for the support though.
On a lighter note, happy new year!
