probably because most of the available footage of him is of him as a 80 year old
Why I am not sure I buy that whole heatedly is that the film is so incredibly grainy, especially the one shared yesterday, that it looks older than what I've seen of 1953 footage.

I've never seen a picture of him, or even spoken of where the keeper was standing back.

So to say he's more comparable to Ambrose is a bit of a stretch to me.

he played years of domestic as a 60 year old afaik, outperformed the then 31 year old Constantine but eh
For what looked very and remarkably close to spin.

Do we believe that Murali, Lillee, Trueman, anyone of the modern era would.dominate any form of quality cricket at 60?

I had the same thought - not sure if people were talking about different footage, but there's surely no way the film shared in this thread was a) showing Barnes in his 80s, or b) film from the 1950s.

This video tells at 1:01 that the footage was from when he was 80 years old.

No, because Barnes's feat is actually unprecedented in the history of the game, I can't see anyone replicating it, the same way I can't see Barnes hit 145 kmph like Ambrose did (in the first part of his career).

I think he's mentioned more than someone like Hutton or Hammond, and that's a feat considering how he's older than them and he was despised as an individual at the time.
That's true. Among those who said Barnes was the best bowler they ever saw were: Hobbs, Woolley, Strudwick, MacLaren, Rhodes, Warner, Johnny Tyldesley and Arthur Gilligan among Englishmen. Plus Noble, Hill, Macartney and Faulkner.

Few of his contemporaries disagreed. Fry said he found Lohmann more difficult (he and Barnes had clashed when Fry was England captain in 1912). Herbie Taylor played Barnes well on matting and rated Vogler higher. Vic Richardson saw Barnes in Australia in 1911-12 and placed him behind O'Reilly.

Hammond. Hutton. Hobbs. All of them are seen as pre war batsmen. No cricketer except Don Bradman from that era is talked about nowadays

would add in Constantine who must've seen him only in late 20s.

Maybe I am wrong but the only cricketers before 1970 that are mentioned frequently on most forums are Don Bradman and Gary Sobers.
