ODI Bowlers Poll - discussions

We get it that you like FdV. But the objection will always be that he didn't play enough. No need to act shocked.

Edit: And his average seems ... well ... average
Well that's largely due to apartheid, nothing he could do really. And it's not like Steyn and Morkel played a lot more matches. IIRC it's 125 and 117, much more than 83 but not deal maker given one debuted at 28 for something out of his control.
Also well, he has a better average than these 2. Ofcourse after Era adjustment no longer, but don't think close enough to overcome the SR gap really.

This latest round we had 3 solid additions (stats wise) to our list. It appears we have enough interest/voters to continue on to a Top 40.
Looking at my list of contenders for the final 11 spots (and it's by no means a definitive list) I note that, from an averages point of view we have 5 bowlers with an average <25 and a further 4 within the 25-26 range. If strike rate is considered then there are 7 with a SR <40. Finally, looking at economy rates, there are 14 with ERs <5 with 3 of these < 4.
If I consider average <25, SR <25 and ER < 5 I am faced with 4 names. 3 of these will get my votes with the 4th name ready for the following round.
All this means I have, temporarily, abandoned a couple of players who received my votes in earlier stages.

It's actually the opposite. People underrate Steyn in ODIs because he bowled a less ***y style in ODIs compared to tests but he was still about as good as Morkel and the world's best bowler at times. Both definitely better than Fanie though.
Fanie DV is SA's 4th best ever ODI bowler behind Pollock, Donald, and Tahir. Ntini and Morkel are next. Steyn would perhaps be next along with Matthews and Tsotobe.

I don't want to sound biased to NZers but the likes of Chatfield, Vettori, Mills, Henry, Santner and Larsen were/are all equal to or better than Steyn.

I've (wrongly) only voted for pacers so far but I kept coming back to almost pick one Spinner, Ajantha Mendis. I know batsmen learned to pick him at the end of his career but his record is still arguably better than Tahir and Ajmal

Mendis: 87 games, 152 wkts @ 21.86, SR 27.3, 1.75 wpm, econ 4.80, 7-4wkt, 3-5wkt

Tahir: 107 games, 173 wkts @ 24.83, SR 32.0, 1.62 wpm, econ 4.65, 7-4wkt, 3-5wkt

Ajmal: 113 games, 184 wkts @ 22.72, SR 32.6, 1.63 wpm, econ 4.18, 6-4wkt, 2-5wkt

I won't bitch much, but Rashid's record against the good teams is painfully mid, as is his WC and CT record. And Ajmal wasn't a bowler, he should not be ranked

Rashid Khan is obviously a brilliant T20 franchise bowler, but in ODIs in the modern era I rate him behind Zampa, Santner, Kuldeep, and Hasaranga.
I ofcourse voted for him and definitely don't think Hasaranga is that close (Chahal defo better imo); but yeah, his no.s are highly flattering, like RTD

I would have him ahead of all these guys but in the same tier

Kuldeep
Mujeeb (I actually rate him a better bowler than Rashid)

The rest

Out of current bowlers, Maheesh Theekshana nad Abrar Ahmed shows promise in ODIs. Wh have to see that whether they make the above tiers.

Tahir is better than most of those bowlers. Vettori & Santner better than many of them.

I see Migara rates Hogg very highly - and rightly so. His credentials (stats) are fine. His average and strike rate are far superior to a couple of other spinners that have been mentioned in voting. No names, but averages over 30 and strike rates over 40 don't impress me much.

Why are older players with high averages getting a pass? Marshall and De Villiers played in easy eras but still had higher averages than a lot of bowlers that haven't gotten votes yet.
