ODI Bowlers Poll - discussions

WC games are just another ODI. Crazy that some people that think WC games with all the minnows are better than the Australia tri-seres in the 1980-90's
Since mid 2010s, a World Cup game against Afghanistan is exponentially more important than a JAMODI between India and Australia.

Yeah I am less hyped about Shami than most. He often gets wickets at death when batters are hitting out. His ability to contain scoring is not particularly great.
You say as if it is a bad thing. It is always good to get wickets when the batters are hitting out. Hampers the scoring.

I do think Shami's figures are a bit distorted, he is still very good but generally whenever I see a NZ vs India game, I don't really worry about Shami's overs in the same way I would a Starc or Bumrah.

I think because he seems like he leaks runs even while he strikes so you're still in the game.

Recall the world cup 2023 semi final when Shami took 7 wickets. You'd think he strangled the opposition in the game given his figures. But in reality NZ was in the game even after 40 overs when they were chasing a mammoth target of almost 400.

This is probably why

And then lost the game due to loss of wickets which one bowler took while the rest were getting thrashed.

Shami took both Mitchell and Williamson and won us that game..... It was more impactful than he bowled his overs even 30 runs cheaper

Starc does all of this too yet he's higher rated than Bumrah. I get all the criticism Shami gets but don't think Starc and Shami should be rated that far apart as ODI bowlers.

Actually Kuldeep bowled 2 cheap overs after 40th. Kiwis were forced to take more risks and Shami cleaned up. Good thing he did. He is a handy ODI bowler. Just not as good as his overall WPM or world cup record suggests. That's why he isn't voted in top 20!

Yeah I am less hyped about Starc too. But Starc > Shami.

In ODIs I believe a good bowler can help get his partners get wickets to a great extent, not so much in tests.

Yeah I'd agree with Starc>Shami but it comes down to preference if anything. Shami has got the better ICC tmt record infact which I rank highly, although Starc has the 2015 MoTT. Also Starc bowled a lot in the pp while Shami was first change for quite a while. But if Starc is top 8, Shami should be top 12-13 imo.. Not much of a difference

I agree with the assessments of Starc and Shami. Both can leak runs but both have impressive strike rates.
As for Rashid Khan, his stats may be enhanced by the quality of his opposition at times, but he is "in" now so we move on.
Time for me to re-introduce Chatfield to the voting. He, and Bob Willis, have impressive averages and economy rates and can't be overlooked forever. The only negative - unimpressive strike rates.
The Sri Lankan pair of Vaas and Malinga are deservedly getting mentions. Of the pair, I lean towards Chaminda (slightly better average and far more economical).

I'm not sure what the fascination is with Chatfield as I seem to remember everyone calling him a "Dibbly Dobbler". If picking a NZ medium pacer then why not Chris Pringle who has a much better record than Chatfield?

Pringle: 64 games, 103 wkts @ 23.87, SR 32.1, econ 4.45

Chatfield: 114 games, 140 wkts @ 25.84, SR 43.3, econ 3.57
