8th Match - Afghanistan v England

Only just flicked it on. What’s he done?
Looked like a left knee injury (which they showed was already heavily strapped from his warm ups). Managed to bowl final 2 deliveries of the over (at reduced pace) and then went off.

So Root/Livingstone will need to bowl 16 overs, although that not looking such an issue given the carnage Archer is causing.

At the rate Afghans are getting dismissed, they may not have to bowl at all.

If he carried it in, I really don’t know why you’d play him in this game. With the blokes who’ve retired/ fallen away a bit you’d think he’s going to be important in the home test summer and looking ahead to out here. His action isn’t exactly easy on the frame

CT has always been 8 teams.

Got a feeling that Root's going to be bowling some of Wood's overs here. Another seamer injured.....
Incorrect, last 4 tournaments have been 8 teams, the first 5 had 8 or more participants.

1998 - 9 teams
2000 - 11 teams
2002 - 12 teams
2004 - 12 teams
2006 - 10 teams

It might just have been standard strapping that all fast bowlers seem to have, but there was a lot of white tape on his legs.

I'd be surprised if we saw him again in this match/tournament....which probably ends on Saturday anyway. Then he's got 3 months off really until the India series.

I don't really like the "3 games for the group stages" layout because it means that teams like England are already in a knockout after just 1 game. Also when weather affects other games it can feel a bit farsicle.

I think either make it 10 teams and do 5v5, or do it a bit 6-nation esque and have every team play each other

It's a short tournament not designed to go on for 6 weeks like a World Cup.

Football tournaments have worked successfully on the 4 team group formats for decades.

Hope Wood's injury isn't too serious. But obviously he shouldn't have been playing here and we all said this from the start.

Archer makes sense to play imo because 1) he's actually good at this format so worth bringing in for a tournament and 2) he's unlikely to play Tests again so he doesn't have anything more important to save him for.

You'd think whilst the Afghans were playing safe and rebuilding, this was the time to sneak some overs in from the 5th/6th bowlers....

Shahidi is so infuriating to watch , and what makes it worse is that he is the captain of Afghanistan so his poor teammates probably are scared to call him out on how slowly he bats.

He has played close to 100 ODI games for a SR of under 70 , like come on brother you gotta do better than this , there are batsmen from the 70's with higher odi strike rates.
