You’d think, but looking a bit deeper away is more important. Generally the average batsmen will average better at home than away, unsurprisingly. This is why a great away record is usually more valuable.
I wonder where Graeme Smith glaze comes from, forget Compton I don't even think he's better than May really. Him beating De Villiers on last year's poll was such a joke.

Interesting though speaking of Compton and May, pretty sure I read a match report recently and a rather sedate innings from one of them was described as beautiful and such despite the slowness. In contrast another innnings in the same match of similar length/SR in similar conditions was described harshly and derided as ugly to watch (despite chances not being given). Stuff like that also contributes somewhat to the whole Barrington underrating, even if you were a slow batsman if you were attractive enough you got away without the same level of criticism
Yeah I'd agree that even if you're slow, if your inning has elegance and style then people would rate it, though don't think what would be aesthetically pleasing about May's batting tbh
