AB has some great knocks brother ..

4th innings match winning 100 vs Australia at Perth in 2008

174 vs England at Headingley 08

100 vs Australia in 2017/2018 at home

169 off 184 vs Australia at WACA 2012

Fastest test hundred by an SA batter

Blockathon innings to save test matches
Never said he hasn't. The ones in Australia especially are great. Which actually comes back to my point that even though he "only" averages 44 in Australia, I'd classify his performances there as genuinely close to ATG level.

Lillee only underperformed on the Pakistan tour. Not having opportunities in Asia elsewhere in his career isn't the same as underperformance.

Er, Compton averages 46.6 in Australia bar a series of injury, 49 in Windies which is fine, nobody cares about NZ of 1950s but his SA record is dissapointing, regardless his away record is fine overall. He played the 1950 Ashes with an inflammed knee, a decision that was regarded as a gamble before the tour and many thought he might not play Cricket again, in Australia, their record otherwise is relative.

in Australia, without the injury influenced series.
Compton: 9 matches, 650 @ 46.4, 2 tons and 3 fifties.
De Villiers: 9 matches, 671 runs @ 44.73, 2 tons and 4 fifties.

he more then makes up for the South African record though, smashes De Villiers at home, averages 13 more.

It does show how much a poor away record/ a sub 50 average affects how future generations rate a player

Those who watched them play rated Compton, May, and Harvey a lot higher than todays fans do

Tbh poor home record is as bad as (if not worse than) poor away record. After all, you are supposed to play almost half of your matches at home. And don't think Smith's home record is superior to Compton's away record.

iirc you’re also supposed to play half your matches away
