Golden & Silver Age vs Modern Age

Ames was definitely a great bat for a keeper at that time. If we’re talking a modern day comparison for his batting skills as a keeper… I’d say probably Carey level and not really that far ahead of Knott.

Ames batting being way overrated here. Yeah I was probably a bit disingenuous with Carey but Ames’ record is vastly held up by performances against weak attacks. I’d much rather have Knott batting in an Ashes series than Ames.

Ames record is really good for a batsman who averaged 40. He scored runs everywhere except in Australia but even there he didn't really let his team down. He'd have been even better if he played as just a batsman. I think he's clearly better than Knott as a batsman (though not as a keeper.)

I know that's referred to as the Golden Age. I consider it the Bronze Age. The Golden Age is the war periods. Then the Silver Age then the Modern Age.
That makes total sense..

Averaging 17? On Australian pitches? In the 30’s? And you want him to play as a full time bat?

Why not? He was picked as a keeper and I've gone through his test innings some time back and it didn't really hurt the side. Runs were still scored. But if he was picked as a bat he'd concentrate on that aspect and improve. 100 fc tons plus a test ave of 40 mainly or all scored as a keeper means he was a batsmen in his own right.

Ames' FC record is magnificent -- honestly, nearing ATVG-level. Sure, he wasn't much good in his 10 tests on flat Australian decks, but that doesn't suddenly make him equivalent to someone who averaged 35 IMO.

I also don’t think it suddenly makes him the second or third best keeper bat which was what was being claimed.

The competition is atrocious. The past decade and a half has produced a very large chunk of the best keeper-batsmen of all-time because for a long time conventional wisdom had the balance between keeping and batting all wrong. The few who defied that trend like Ames, Walcott, and Lindsay – and to a lesser degree Parks, Waite, and Knott – are naturally going to occupy a higher place in the WKB stakes now than in 40 years' time.
