I don't know.

But any argument that places Smith 4th best of all time is kinda flawed IMHO.

We love to put his numbers up against Sachin, but what are they compared to Punter?
Smith at #4 doesn't make sense but I just let Smith keep validating it, even after two tons in the recent BGT he still only managed a 34 average, he's just not there anymore and will likely retire averaging 53-54 where people would rate him more reasonably

It is interesting to me how Root averages higher or equal against every opponent bar each other's teams and windies (and Root has played a better windies, with Dukes), perhaps Smith is not as dominant on this generation as people often presume.
Only stigma in root career is lack of success in Australia (particularly since english public care more about it) and lack of big series overseas a bit like sachin(sachin did have 2007/8 bgt and 2010/1 in south africa but unfortunately they are not rated) like smith had in india 17 and england 19

Ashes 2025 is very big for his legacy

Both smith and root average 50 in india. But many indian fans in this fourm including myself rate smith better because he dominated on turning pitches against two great spinners at peak at their own home. I remember that series was so close because of smith. While root has consistently scored in india( double century vs bumrah and ashwin) except last tour he never give me fear the way smith does

actually Root is 45 while Smith is 50 in India, only two away batters to average 40+ in last decade in India with any meaningful sample size afaik.

Really? Root feels like someone who checks all the boxes for your rating personally, dominant when on top, very capable on tough wickets and has been the best Batsmen in the world by a country mile for quite some time now
Not saying he's not good, but nothing about him screams out ATG when I watch him.

But yes, he has been the best in the world for a little while.
