Yes that’s why I think retiring with a 50+ average is a lot more important for his legacy than doing well in Aus (not that I agree though)
It may be one of the few exceptions.

If Anderson had retired with an average below 25 (I know, laughable concept) but still sucked against Aus it would’ve still been crap. Ashes rivalry and stats are still huge.

Yea that’s true. I’m hoping England can eventually produce more modern era ATGs without the ashes record asterisk (there’s still time for Root to change this and Brook can too). Bothams probably the only Eng player that’s achieved that since 1970.

Meanwhile since 1970, Aus have produced Smith, Chappell, Ponting, Border, Waugh, Warne, McGrath, Lillee, Cummins, and Gilchrist.

Sobers had better pitches for batting at home and I am personally of the belief that Viv faced greater bowling than Sobers, but I completely understand the case for Sobers as well and completely expect Sobers to win the poll considering Sobers was rated as the #3 Batsmen of all time and Viv as #5 just a few years back

you don't really get much than these two, unless you're the Don

Basically it.

I still think Viv faced a far greater consistent challenge than anyone throughout his career and I have him right up there with Sachin.

Amongst the modern guys, these would probably be the ATGs for me:

ATGs-
Batsmen:
Sachin, Lara, Smith, Richards, Gavaskar, Ponting, Chappell, Border, Kallis, Waugh, Dravid, Root
Pacers:
Marshall, McGrath, Hadlee, Steyn, Imran, Ambrose, Akram, Lillee, Donald, Garner, Holding, Waqar, Walsh
Spinners:
Warne, Murali
All Rounders:
Botham, Pollock, Kapil
WK:
Gilchrist, Sangakkara
That's a lot of names imo.

I would remove possibly Dravid, bur for sure,

Root, Waqar, Walsh, Kapil, and Sangakkara as a wk.

Sangakkara was just put in by me in the wkb section. Can put him in the batsman section as well.
I would keep him and Dravid, Root definitely of that level too imo. All of them aren't too much behind Punter, Chappell, Kallis etc for me. All of them are similar tier ATGs for me (Kallis a tier above because of his AR skills but as a batsman is in the similar tier)
Waqar and Walsh, I'm not too sure about either.
Kapil does make it for me though
