The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I don’t have him in my Xi. I leave him from these ATG test stuffs. You already have Hobbs, Hutton/ Sutcliffe opening and a stacked middle order.
I generally include him. I mean, either he is top 2 (at worst 3) from England or you don't rate him. The fact that he had the workload of a frontline bowler, makes it even better for me.

I would put him in an all cricket Xi. Not test. Mainly because I find it too hard to judge, going all the way back and comparing to other countries Xi. Test cricket ofc started after his peak and all. I amn’t gonna bother having him in the Xi given England already have ridiculous batting talent. Greatest Cricketer to come out from England and top 5 cricketer of all time.

I think there is great validity in only rating players you have seen. Also, too many people swoon over stats which hold considerable, but not absolute, value.

Hmmm so someones post about someone elses All Time XI not having any modern players inspired this. Have a feeling its been done before but eh, why not. An XI that has always had at least one of its players playing test cricket.

WG Grace
Len Hutton
Don Bradman*
Sachin Tendulkar
Steve Smith
Garry Sobers
Wilfred Rhodes
Richard Hadlee
Jack Blackham+
Malcolm Marshall
Glenn McGrath

So I managed to cover up until today with 9 players, so I chose Marshall and McGrath to round out the side. Could probably make a completely different combo another time.

WG Grace* 7
Jack Hobbs
Don Bradman
Brian Lara
Garry Sobers 4
Monty Noble 6
Keith Miller 3
Imran Khan 2
Mohammad Rizwan+
Alfred Shaw 5
Dale Steyn 1

Tried to get someone from the current test and opt for a mostly different side. It's quite a lot worse, lol. And doesn't have a real spinner. But it's liable to troll a win.

hmmm. This is mostly me trying to get a better spinner than Rhodes.

Grace
Hobbs
Bradman
Tendulkar
Sobers
Miller
Noble
Blackham+
Warne
Steyn
Bumrah

This one ends up having only one spare spot for Warne.

Including someone from the current actual test is hard cos the only guy you’d actually want is Rizwan but that means you lose the best and longest tenured player of the original 1877 test.

Joe Misso was born on 1 March 1920. He attended St Peter's College Colombo. Among the hundreds he scored there were two against St Joseph's College.

He was a left-hand bat with a sound defence who put away the bad ball. In 1956 he left Ceylon for England, by which time he had scored 168 centuries, all non first-class. In 1938 he scored 4236 runs with 18 centuries. Misso recorded another 142 hundreds in England for various clubs, mainly Teddington Town, Great Western Railway, Turnham Green and Brentham. His last hundred was in 1978. Misso died in 2011.

His 310 centuries are a record for all cricket.

Regarding the England uncapped XI, James Langridge played Tests. It was his brother John who was not picked.
Any insight on his average?

Any information on how many matches he played in total to get those 310 centuries? And how many runs he scored in total?
Nothing definitive. However one can make a few assumptions.

Joe Misso's first 168 hundreds were scored in Ceylon during twenty years from the mid-1930s until 1955. His best year was 1938 when he made 4236 runs with 18 centuries. Average unknown. He was then 18 and still at school. At least one of his hundreds was for St Peter's College. I don't know how many matches were arranged in Ceylon at the time.

In 1956 he moved to England and played at least until 1978 when he made his last century, aged 58. These days there are Over-70s national championships and World Cups. It is quite possible to have a cricket career of 60 years or more. In Misso's day the limit was nearer 50 years. But there were more matches in a season. Within the Greater London area, there was a match somewhere every day in August. Teachers, students and others took advantage. The English season lasted five and a half months. Some wandering clubs arranged over a hundred matches a season, in addition to overseas tours. Misso played for some of these clubs and could easily have appeared in 60 or more matches per year. It was not uncommon for club cricketers to rack up in excess of 2,000 matches during their careers. With Ceylon included, Misso may well have done so.

The highest recorded career run aggregate in club cricket is in excess of 120,000. The number of batsmen known to have reached 100,000 is in single figures. The only regular first-class cricketer to reach this milestone in all cricket is WG Grace who played a lot of non first-class matches. Misso may or may not have reached the 100,000 mark. If not he would have been close. He was known to be very disciplined about compiling centuries and didn't hit out for the sake of it.

Ugh Root at 3. Would be a considerably better middle order just by swapping around Compton and Root.
TBF batting 3 behind Hutton & Sutcliffe would probably be equivalent protection to batting 5 in most England sides Root's featured in.

I also don't think of Compton as a #3 either, if I had that middle order I'd put May there.

Honestly all 3 were usually 4’s. So since it was purely a home XI I chose the guy who was best at home in his natural 4 position. Then Root played a lot more at 3 than Compton did so I went with that.

For some reason I thought Compton played a lot more at 3 than he actually did. May does have the best record at 3 of the lot, especially considering he played in the lowest scoring era of the lot.

So I remembered a recent post re: initials so here’s an XI of players with just a first and last name.

H Sutcliffe
L Hutton*
Mohammad Yousuf
V Kohli
A Flower
S Chanderpaul
Q de Kock+
R Ashwin
Wasim Akram
K Rabada
J Garner

Might do another one with 3+ or 4+ initials.
