A lot might depend on who else goes at the time. They won't want to lose 4 or5 players at once but at his age his body may pack up very quickly.
He's a finger spinner and has had very few injury problems in his career. Physically he could keep going for years yet.

Ashwin you'd have said the same about 12 months ago.

Though you'd think they'd like him to carry on by time Khawaja, Smith, Starc and Hazlewood have all gone.

Definitely, I don't think Lyon will retire, he will have to be forced out by Australia, unlike most cricketers , his Test career is all he has going for him in cricket so he'll be keen to play as much as possible

Lyon, Haze and Starc will all go pretty much the same time I would have thought. Who knows about Cummins. Could be a bit of a 2007- like mass retirement for the Aussies coming up soon

Yeah which is why Lyon may stay an extra year to help lessen the disruption.

Having gone through a mini revamp with England recently it is scary and exciting at the same time. Who can step up or looks like having ability to in future.

One of the differences has been that England were able to blood some others alongside their stalwarts, so they seemed a bit more ready to come in when they retired. But how often do you ever see anyone other than that main bowling 4? Even the usual reserve (Boland) is the same age.

Then you throw in the carnage trying to find one opener to replace Warner and remember Khawaja is on the way out too.

England won the next 3 Ashes after 2007......good times.

My guess is that he'll do his best to stick around until 600. His action isn't too taxing and he's not had any serious shoulder or finger troubles from my memory.

Lyon won't retire after Ashes unless he has a poor 2025.

If he plays 2026/27 season, he will go on and tour India and possibly England too in 2027.

So I definitely expect him to take 600+ wickets.

He basically takes wickets at 4 per Test, so that would suggest he's going to need 17 to get there. The end of next year's Ashes is 11 Tests away (possibly 12 with a WTC Final). After that Aus have virtually no Test Cricket for 10 months. Does he go to SA in Oct '26 when he's about to turn 39? I'd be surprised if he makes it to 600 before that.

Anyway, in a delicious sense of irony, I suspect England will end his career!!
Genuinely laughed. Zero test wins in Australia since 2011 and here we are talking about ending a career of a bloke with 500 plus wickets. Easily the most overrated mob in the game

Wondering who these are given it's a word usually reserved for really good players. Jonny Bairstow I guess

Glad you laughed, it was meant as a joke what with Lyon's comments previously. Although, win or lose, it may well end up being his last series.

The discussion is about bowlers, so I'll let that sink in for you (guessing about another month or so) and see if you can think of someone else....
