Not sure average when bowled is the best measure. Anyways Tendulkar was tested far more on this measure against pure pace than I saw Smith.Sachin got out numerous times by lbw and clean bowled, to the inswinger of Pollock, McGrath,md Asif, Jimmy Anderson, Waqar...
Sachin averaged only 37 whenever he got out via clean bowled and lbw, Steve Smith is still averages 50+ despite his recent struggles and like sachin, joe root who struggles against inswing deliveries averages 38

Clearly Smith has NOT faced 90+ MPH bowling much at all!

I remember the Sky commentary team going on about how Eng would target Smith with pace over 90 mph. And I recall Mark Wood coming in short bursts and going hard at Smith with most of his deliveries above 90 miles indeed. And after this stat was published, Wood got Smith twice in that 4th Ashes test itself, so Smith's average against express pace has only come down. When stat was published- 207 / 7 dismissals = avg 29.5725 over his career seems impossible. Doesn't line up with the eye test either.
This was published when he was batting in the 1st innings of the 4th Ashes Test in 2023. Smith has played 14 tests since.Lol Smith has faced 12000 balls against pace, and this shows only 8k
Brett Lee.Thommo and Shoaib were probably quicker. Tait didn’t play test so doesn’t count. Sachin never faced Thommo, so only Shoaib. Other than him Nortje, Wood and Archer are as quick as anyone ever. Not that far from Thommo/ Shoaib.
All those bowlers of previous era, slow down their speed after few years, Mitchell starc is the only bowler of cricket who is still bowling at 140+ kmph even after 15+ years.Makes you wonder how rare is genuine quick bowling in Test cricket (particularly nowadays). Very few balls are actually above 145 kmph.
Even the really quick bowlers only bowl a few of their deliveries above that 90 mile mark during their spells (when they are fresh).
Tbh I don’t think Lee was any quicker than Nortje, Wood and Archer.Brett Lee.
Tendulkar had faced Tait in a test too but Tait eventually broke down.
Donald too. It's always been pretty rare. I think the only bowlers who cracked 90mph consistently in Tendulkar's era were Shoaib, Lee, Tait (in one series), Bond (in one series). Maybe when he faced Waqar in his debut series. So the total number of 90mph balls he faced wouldn't really be that high.

It's rare that a bowler consistently bowls at that pace, but extremely common for bowlers to go over it at times. It's always been pretty rare.
