Usually the fundamental criteria in putting an innings in the greatest list is that - it shouldn't be in a losing cause.
So changing the result will change everything.
Just quality-wise, I am not a big fan of the 153*, I felt Lara gave too many chances.
But in context of the pressure on Lara, and the quality of the opposition, and the sheer drama of a 4th innings chase (last 60 runs scored with the last 2 batsmen - Ambrose & Walsh), it is understandably rated very high by everyone who followed it live at the time.
What about the 213 the match prior? Wi were like 30 odd for 4 and people genuinely thought wi would miss the following on.

Great knocks by Indian batsmen in a match lost
Laxman’s 167
Kapil’s 129
Sachin’s 136
Gavaskar’s 96

These are the top 4 that comes to my mind now
Kohli and Hazare twin tons at Adelaide. Kohli's tons at Edgbaston and Centurion also up there.

One of my personal favourites is Dravid's 76 at Wellington on a crazy pitch, played some cracking shots vs Bond at his best.

213 was a better innings on pure quality imo. There was arguably more pressure on Lara that innings too because he'd just been stripped of the captaincy and WI had been bowled out for 51 the previous test.
I think now I get the context - 153* is special because it is the second consecutive win against Australia with a match winning performance by Lara after 213

What a Bowler Shane Bond after seeing his performance against Australia in 2003 World Cup felt he will emerge as the best bowler of the decade but faded out quickly

Not true. Eng Ashes quartet in particular Flintoff and Harmison, Bond in NZ gave him issues in the 2000s. He didn't face Shoaib much but got retired hurt by a bouncer from him in 2004.
Flintoff and Harmison aren't particularly...express, Lee was faster than either and Lara handled him well

When Kapil scored that 129 against Donald in South Africa in 1992, the next highest score in that innings was 17. First 6 Indian batsmen all out without reaching double digits.

Kohli has a ton of Great tons in losing matches. The last top quality innings from him was the 76 vs SA at the end of 23.
