Yeah Lara kinda had the root problem against bounce, his scoring shots often became a liability when the ball bounced hard.
That's how Donald got on top of him too in 98.


If Lara played without a helmet in the 70s against Thommo and Lillee, would end up in the hospital by the end of the series.

That's not necessarily true. If he did and never had his eye issues no. He played express pace in WI 1st class cricket with usually a cap on. Anyway, plenty of helmet era players would be in serious issues or did you not see Harmisson draw blood from Ponting for example in 2005.

Lara before 94 as stated did not have issues with pace. He played Donald and Wasim and Waqar fairly well.

I think that would be true for every batsman who played from the 90s with a helmet. Each and every one of them have been hit so many times on the head throughout their career, it is hard to imagine what their condition would have been like if they had been playing without a helmet.

Below blows would have definitely been hospital cases without a helmet.
