Jacques Kallis vs Ricky Ponting

Who is the greater test batsman?

Bolo.

First off, Kallis doesn't have a much better away record. Ponting has a problem in India, Kallis is sub par in SL and Eng. They both did well outside of that.

Kallis record at home is his biggest USP.

But he lacked the ability to dominate attacks for much of his career.
These country comparisons have a habit of being disingenuous. Kallis averages 54 away. Ponting 46. These are very different numbers, and they don't come from being worse in 2 countries. Are there any bats in modern cricket with an 8 point gap in average who you would rate the lower averaging bat better for? Assuming roughly equivalent factors like era, career length and batting position.

Edited for the future, you're welcome.
is it really is possible Kohli falls to 42-43 average? Smith was iirc averaging 37 on English greentops last year so Kohli being the far inferior bat will prob average 25, which will only get him to 45.

Laxman over Yousuf. Mark Waugh over Jaya. Etc.

how much these lads bullied the borderline minnow level helpless Post Walsh 2000s Windies attack

Kallis — 1604 runs @ 100.25 with 7 tons
Ponting — 1457 runs @ 60.7 with 6 tons, Excluding Roach, 1175 runs @ 83.92 with 6 tons.

Nice.

Kallis avgs 33 at home vs Australia.
(14 Tests)

The closest thing to facing a South African bowling attack in South Africa is facing an Australian pace attack. Kallis didn't have to face his own pace bowlers, so his real test in home conditions was against Australia. And he didn't have success.
He averaged over 50 vs the English attack in 2005 that won the Ashes in 2005.
He was also the best batsman and averaged over 60 when WI toured SA in 2000.. which had both Ambrose and Walsh. I think Ambrose or Walsh missed a test.
