If he could jag a stack of wickets against the Windies, England, India, Pakistan and NZ then no doubt he would have done well there too.
Everyone accepts Lillee is an all time great who proved himself against numerous opponents. The issue is he did not prove himself in various conditions.

Neither was my post. I was responding to someone dismissing Gavaskars record against Lillee because it was "only 3 tests", however Lillee's "only 3 tests" in Pakistan always count
Gavaskar proved himself against the best fast bowlers of his generation.

Lillee did not prove himself outside Australia, England and NewZealand.

That’s the biggest difference.

Gavaskar had one bad series in a country when a particular bowler (Lilee) played, but toured several other times and did well (against some quality bowlers too like Thomson, Reid)

Lillee had one bad series in a country, with no qualifiers and that was the only time he toured.

Not really the same is it?
Gavaskar having one bad series against Lillie is not the same as Lillee not playing enough outside Aus/Eng/NZ. Maybe they are from Australia and can’t accept it.

He failed when playing for ROW against Australia in a 5 match series earlier too. Averaged 28, I think. Same series where Sobers scored that 254 that everyone talks about.

Saying Gavaskar succeeded vs full strength Aus because of that one 70 is like saying Ponting succeeded in India because he made one ton there.

Give up. It’s over.

Lol. I never said he "succeeded". I said it wasn't a failure worth hyping up, unlike Lillee's Pakistan tour. Ponting's last two India tours were actually quite decent.

Sure but had big tours in 78 and 85 (Reid, McDrermott and Hughes is a pretty great attack on paper) when Australia had some reasonably good bowlers (and some terrible ones tbf). Don't think anyone bigs up Sunny's Australia record as something amazing but you'd have to be a dummy or an Australian or more likely both to equate that with Lillee's body of work overseas.

Merv was on dayboo that series. Recall Max Walker commentating when they had a close up of him: “Not a pretty man, Merv….”

He played only two Test Series before that IIRC. Ofcourse had that WI tour, but was far from developed.
So Gavaskar failed in the ROW series because "He played only two Test Series before that"

How can you use that as an excuse when Lillee had only played 2 tests before that ROW series and he took 24 wkts @ 20.08 in 4 "ROW tests"

(And Lillee was bowling to best in the World, while Gavaskar was only batting against Australia)

Lillee simply did much better in that series. I just gave some context that Gavaskar wasn't a polished veteran back then.

Didn't he have a few against Marshall in 78 as well?
