2024–25 NZ domestic season

Don't think Chu's batting will ever get there.
I reckon his finishing will.

Watched Mitch Hay live at Bay Oval and he strikes me as a bit of a shoveller at the death...not a natural finisher, whereas Chu seems to have the nous and the ability to hit in different areas + manipulate bowling. I reckon he could do it at the top of the innings, too

You're right, but that's so typical of essentially 'batting like a wicket keeper'.

Yeah you do tend to get those crafty wicket keeper bats. Jury is out on Hay who I reckon might be a Test player but can struggle to put the foot down v good bowling, Fletcher has fallen off a cliff after being in the frame 2 years ago, Cleaver is not an option, Blundell on the way out and Pomare is a battler. Not a lot of heat on the incumbents

Macewell really a level above with the bat here.

Abbas's batting has disappointed me a little this Super Smash, as a highly rated poni. Seems like he's trying to push and fiddle a little much? Rather than striking and trusting his shots. Hopefully just a temporary dip in form. Not having the best FC season either.

Yeah I can see Hay as a specialist bat where I can't see it with Chu. But I can also see Hay just totally flopping at one day batting in a way that I couldn't see with Chu - he just has 'plucky innovative lower order keeper-bat' written all over him.

Nevin vs Parore, except Hay's keeping is a fair bit better than Nevin's was already.

Hopefully just 2nd season syndrome, but yeah has been rough going for him.

And Nevin was never good enough to be a specialist bat.

Nevin? For a funky keeper bat that didn't quite make the NZ grade would go Peter McGlashan. I think Chu is a little better than that though, especially having added strength/power this season.
I think Nevin is more like Hay in that he bats more like a specialist batsman but isn't particularly suited to the funky role down the order in white ball cricket, that was the comparison I made. Chu is more like Parore or McGlashan in that way.

Didn't need to do that Bracewell. At 41 off 36 he could've just pushed it around and put away the freebies. Really opened the door here for Otago.

Yeah I didn't get it because I didn't remember either Nevin or Parore as particularly innovative white ball batters.

Nevin was basically a pauper's Gilchrist in ODI's, and quite possibly the worst with the gloves of any keeper I've seen represent NZ. I'd say the selectors were mad to ever give him a shot ahead of Parore, but given how much of a dickhead Adam was I kinda get it.
