Full list of number one test batters

Darwin Award

U19 Vice-Captain
From what I can see Alastair Cook is the only batsman on that list that has scored 10,000 runs + and not be on the list.

The next one down after that (in terms of runs) is Graeme Smith.

He averages 52 in tests and presumably hit a very purple patch.
His very purple patch (historical even) was in 2006 though, that's why it seems off. I also recall him taking time off to go preaching which would've seen him lose points.

Will need to look into further. I don't think my memory is that bad.

2006 (11 matches) - 1788 runs @ 99.33, 9 100s
2007 (6 matches) - 368 runs @ 41, no 100s
2008 (DNP, though I don't think we played any Tests due to the SL bus bombings)
2009 (7 matches) - 566 runs @ 40, 1 100

So yeah, I think wisden might have something off here. Or the standard of batting declined sharply in 2009 allowing Yousuf to go number 1 then but somehow not earlier.

Hussey and Pietersen were also in very good form in 2006 and so was Ponting

Yousuf was ranked the 1st batter in ICC Ranking on July 8th, 2009; So Wisden got it right.

That is so odd haha.
I believe Younis was no. 1 prior to that match, and he didn’t have anywhere near as good a match as MoYo. MoYo hadn’t played since the end of 07 so still lost points from his previous ranking despite the only ton in the match. Odd system indeed.

Just checked - Pakistan only played 3 tests in that time period, so no wonder he didn’t lose that many points.

It's crazy, from Christmas 1928 to March 1934 he averaged 75, yet he couldn't get the Number 1 spot off Sutcliffe or Bradman!!

How dirty would Michael Vaughan feel to have Ricky Ponting snatch the Year End Number 1 test batter title away from him right at the very end of the year practically... December 30th.
Vaughan should feel a bit embarrassed to be mentioned in the same sentence as Ponting

I wonder what the closest he got was
I'm going to guess in 1933 when he went double, triple (no) against NZ.

Actually, his two preceding knocks at the end of the Ashes (a month before) were 101 and 75* too. He average 370 across those 4 innings!!
