The more you go into their records, the more you realise that Lara has almost no case to be ahead of Sachin.

The sole exception is if you rate someone based on their top level performances only like great innings and dominant series for which Sachin is behind.

Lara has an average of 34 in 17 Tests against India.

Lara toured NZ thrice(1994, 1999, 2005). He averages 36 in 7 Tests.
Sachin has only bad average vs SL in 90s.Lara boost his average by playing against weak Eng bowling and he didn't even faced late 2000s SA peak bowlers like Sachin did.He also didn't faced Shoiab or Sami in Pak.One argument against Sachin is that he faced too much weak NZ bowlers and didn't faced peak Wasim or Waqar

And some can argue Lara had better runs/innings because Sachin has a lot of not outs

Wasim wasn't at peak but was bowling very well in that 99 series. Waqar was finished though.

Sachin faced Bond in NZ but didn't score much that series. He definitely also piled on easier runs in Eng and NZ. The only difference with Lara is he had more productive series there whereas Lara was only great in one out of three tours in both countries.

Also I think Lara didn't faced post 2005 ashes Eng.Before that nobody consider Eng to have good bowling unit (especially in 90s)
No he faced the Ashes quartet that had formed just before in 2004 home and away and frankly struggled against the pace and bounce of Flintoff and Harmison.

The late 90s attack which had Cairns, Doull, Nash was fine. Not amazing bowlers but quite good for home conditions. They were much worse in the 2000s (whenever Bond was injured) because all they had were Chris Martin, O'Brein, Franklin, etc. who were all terrible.
Yeah I feel we slag off the 90s NZ bowling a bit too much. It wasnt Hadlee but was a reasonable challenge in NZ conditions.

Doull and Nash had injury trouble but when they played they were pretty good. Cairns too obviously. In comparison to some other 90s attacks like SA/Aus/Pak/WI they were weaker of course but certainly good on their own merits and could be very troublesome to face especially if they got seaming conditions.

Just curious.
I often hear that Lara is great against spin.
Why did he not dominate India then?
We never had a great fast bowler before Bumrah.
We are dependant mostly on spinners back then.

He by his own admission had trouble dominating flat spinners like Kumble and Harbi because they kept him quiet in his crease.

He preferred spinners who gave more flight.

I also feel the same about England with Gough and Caddick. Quite a handful in English conditions but 90s and early 2000s England just gets written off.

Lara's best innings vs India was the one at Mohali in the 94 series imo. Opened the batting and gave them a lightning quick start to allow them to push for a win. Made a good 4th innings hundred later in his career to draw a test too iirc.
