I feel in an all time great team a four pronged pace attack would not be a wrong choice even it is unpopular
The counter would be that the marginal return of a fourth pacer to deliver more after the three worldclass pacers is less than the spinner doing the tasks of those scenarios when it works to their strength (marathon spells, overrate issue, spinning wickets or 3rd/4th innings performances).

And it's not like all ATG bats were great against spin.
This probably gets overlooked far more than it should. imo its a big reason WI had so many more draws than Aus. I made a post on their win rate in games where Roger Harper (the best spinner they had then) played vs when he didn’t. iirc far less draws, similar loss rate increased win rate.

If you’re bowling 10-15 less overs a day, whats the point of having a bowler who might strike slightly faster? And most likely has a lot of similarities to the other bowlers in the attack.

Chris Martin underrated.

Wouldn’t that make a poor performance against them worse?
Well both Sachin and Lara didn't showed much against them.I mean early 90s SL bowling was probably worse than NZ ever could like bowling ave being 39 and both Sachin and Lara ave 30 something vs these SL team

My interpretation is that Lara played too much vs Eng that gave him boost in ave unlike Sachin.Lara like Sachin didn't played much vs NZ unlike Sachin but his ave wasn't good to begin with.Lara succeeded vs SL more than Sachin and he played few unlike Sachin.Sachin is better vs Aus.Lara is better vs SA but Lara didn't face peak bowlers in late 2000s SA bowling. Also Lara batted half his innings in WI where for most of the time more batting friendly than SENA and Ind is more batting friendly than WI but Sachin played half his match against lesser batting friendly places (only Pak and SL being more batting friendly than Ind)
