Lords ATG XIs and Bowler Peer Ratings

Sorry what? I acknowledge people said it. They were just wrong to do so.

Or atleast that he was already the best since bradman. On course is more debatable.
Nah, no one said he was the best. Just that he was heading in that direction, and yeah. I know you disagree, apparently also in real time.

Players who had higher reps than I thought based on peer ratings:

McGrath
Hayden
Greenidge
Gooch
Cook
Sanga

Players who had lower:
Gavaskar
Donald
Ambrose
G Smith
This is clearly a generations thing. Players (and because we tend to follow those trends in perception us by extension), tend to rate the generation just before them. As they are the legends they catch at the tail end of their peak. The players in the first group are being aged into the legendary status, particularly McGrath, Hayden, Sanga.

The older players like Ambrose and Donald in particular are aging out of that status, as current players, and even players a generation out simply never saw them play.

We have that same sort of "anti recency" bias that the players and media pundits have, so it's good to see these players now getting their dues after being expectedly underrated.

Hayden was being rated ahead by players who played him in his early career and those in later career and also new cricketers who never played him. Same with McGrath.

Hayden's career coincided with Sehwag and he just appeared much more frequently in these ATG XIs. It wasn't even close.

That doesn't explain Wasim's tremendous peer rating advantage compared to Ambrose and Donald who all retired at the same time. And many of these ex-cricketers listed did play Donald and Ambrose.

Fun fact: Hayden has 21 tons at home in 56 matches, Sehwag has 23 tons in his career in 104 matches

Hayden ain't great in those same countries too.
Yeah there’s considerable overlap in countries where both averaged <35 and both scored a similar number of tons away from home (8/11). Sehwag’ troughs are lower than Hayden’s though and both were probably equally dominant at home, Hayden maybe more so. I remember the horror tour Sehwag had of England in 2011 where was flown in mid-series. Completely wrecked his average from 59 in 4 matches to 28 in 6 matches. The same happened in the next tour to Australia. That team really needed to change after the WC win, everyone hung on for too long.
