Gilly is a better keeper and the bat role is completely different as Gilly is a shock attack opener and Gilly has three key WC final performances so it's debatable. I agree Dhoni is better because of captaincy but Gilly has a case.
Yeah Dhoni has too much not outs and he didn't play top order unlike his early career

Even without captaincy, I think most have Dhoni right after the Big 4 with Bevan. Those guys had a way more niche and impactful skill set but even without considering that, I will put them in a tier with Abbas, Ponting, Jones, Lara and Rohit; ahead of all those 5. Gilchrist simply is in the one below. Not only for just average, he was never as good overall a batsman as them and that's not shame.
Yeah to me I am not sure if Dhoni makes my top ten bats. But we can disagree.

I mean, you know as well as I do that the ball do much less **** in an ODI track compared to a 5th Day Test one or the swing/seam is significantly less than with a Test New ball. There's a reason so many people like Dravid had kept long in ODIs. It's significantly easier. Dhoni wasn't bad to spin anyways and he kept to his fair share of sprayers. Overall, I will prefer Dhoni for his more LOI specialist skill sets but at worst they are around equal.
No the issue was Lee spraying it down leg with wides requiring Gilly athletic reach at 95 MPH. Don't think Dhoni had to deal with that.

No, probably not. Though must be said I can't remember, I remember seldom things pre 2013 Champions Trophy. So can't say if any Indian pacer was as erratic and Dhoni definitely wasn't the most athletic one. Still think their keeping really is equalish, 4 byes means much less than a run out (most often).

That's the issue. Also I recall needlessly soaking time in the crease and making many games where they should be coasting into tight ones.

He had an early phase of master blaster up the order.

Then the mid phase of ace closer still with power hitting.

And then a stretch where he was more effectiveness at just staying in the crease till the end.

He literally batted at 5/6. He should have plentiful not outs. It's a bad argument honestly, he was an undoubtedly top 2 finisher. Not always you need someone to open to be good, ODI have vastly different roles. His decline is a fair one.

Yeah but you know what I am saying? He did turn many easy wins into tight finishes and I was always stretching my head why.

All I can say is there are probably very few games that were possible wins, he batted properly and we lost. Confidence probably that he will cross the line, don't know for sure but him not doing that is certainly very rare.
