Absurdly Awesome Cricket Stats

Qlder

International Regular
Pat Cummins is about to overtake Craig McDermott on the Aussie wicket taker list, with both now on 291 wkts. The awesome stat is that both have bowled the exact same 124 innings for their 291 wkts

Cummins goes above a 60% win rate, joining other captains like Waugh, Ponting and Bradman.

To find a captain of another country exceeding 60% you need to drop the qualification to 13 matches.

Temba Bavuma btw - may be on his way to producing one of the greatest captaincy records the game has ever seen. He’s in his 9th match, currently with 7 wins and a draw. He has also won the toss 8 times out of 9.

Plus he’s averaging 57 with 3 tons and 4 fifties. Compared with 34 with 1 ton and 20 fifties in his other 54 matches.

Pat Cummins now averages 19.92 with the ball in Australia. That is the best average by far of any pace bowler to take 100 wkts in Australia. The top 5 are:

Cummins - 177 wkts @ 19.92
Lindwall - 112 wkts @ 22.07
McGrath - 289 @ 22.43
Hazlewood - 168 @ 22.70
Lillee - 231 wkts @ 23.73

Johnston (101 wkts @ 22.49) was primarily a pace bowler. I suppose a handful of those wickets were probably taken with spin, but it seems weird to single out "pace bowler" to exclude him when no spinner qualifies for this list anyway.

Yeah, I purposely excluded Johnston so that I could get Lillee in 5th....

Nah, you're over thinking it. I used stats guru and selected pacer because my post was about Cummins (I don't compare spinners to pacers). Cricinfo obviously doesn't thing Johnston was a pacer as he's not on the list

Dumb cricinfo.
tbf I think their categories are pace, spin, mixture/unknown.

Top 5 with mixture

Sobers 235 @ 34.03 (Left arm fast medium, Slow left arm orthodox, Left arm wrist spin)
Johnston 160 @ 23.91 (Left arm fast medium, Slow left arm orthodox)
Tate 155 @ 26.16 (Right arm medium fast, Right arm medium, Right arm offbreak)
Greig 141 @ 32.20 (Right arm medium, Right arm offbreak)
Noble 121 @ 25.00 (Right arm medium, Right arm offbreak)

"Mixture" bowlers should really come up on pace and spin searches (maybe highlighted or with asterisks / in italics). Also I didn't know Tate ever bowled offies, lol.

not in tests I don’t think as he’d changed to the style that got him test selection around 1923. The story goes he was bowling his regular off breaks to an obdurate Mead when he sent down a fast ball that knocked his stumps out.

his captain asked him to send down that ball in subsequent net session and Tate continually made his stumps leap. From then on he was given the new ball and onto his fame.

If you drop the requirement to 50 wickets, the top 10 (since 1900) is still mostly Australian, but not the very top:

Bumrah - 64 @ 17.15
Hadlee - 77 @ 17.83
Ambrose - 78 @ 19.79
Cummins - 177 @ 19.92
Reid - 84 @ 20.05
Miller - 85 @ 20.47
Davidson - 84 @ 21.04
Lindwall - 112 @ 22.07
Barnes - 77 @ 22.42
McGrath - 289 @ 22.43

With this current match, Smith has passed both Border and Waugh to stand alone with the 4th most tons in tests as captain (16), in just 39 matches. Ahead of him are Graeme Smith (25 in 109), Kohli (20 in 68) and Ponting (19 in 77).

Best 3 test captains in terms of batting performance (min 10 tests):

Bradman 24 matches 3147 @ 101.51 14 tons
Sangakkara 15 matches 1601 @ 69.60 7 tons
Smith 39 matches 3971 @ 68.46 16 tons

Nobody else averages above 60.

Another Aussie captain - Cummins - needs 9 more wickets to pass Benaud for second all time as captain. Still 57 to catch Imran.

Kohli comes close with 58% had couple of matches like sydney 19 and one in bd washed out. Wish he won both of them would have 60% win rate and be in elite company

Bannerman holds the well-known record of the highest percentage of a completed innings, but he is also the 1st century maker on debut but also still holds the highest score for an Australian on debut.
