I think it's because they don't think they have a good replacement for his 'variety'. If Haze has a little niggle they're quite happy to rotate him out for Boland because they're so similar, but they're more resistant to rest Starc because they don't have another similar bowler. But when he's just wasting the new ball and/or getting smashed they don't get bonus points for him being faster or left arm, so they really need to rethink that policy.
We do seem to be a bit bewitched by left armers, even if some of them turn out to be Chris Matthews. I think that if Starc was exactly the same style of bower with exactly the same career, but right handed, the plaudits he gets would be significantly more muted and he'd be correctly recognised as someone who bowls good spells but is too inconsistent to be top tier and whose bad spells can be damaging.

IIRC he bowled six balls - so a full set - in a row that really all should have been hit for four. Just absolute mince pies.
Haha yep. His first ball was fine but then he bowled six balls in a row that consisted of five short-and-wide and one half-volley.

Seriously though, what's wrong with him? I can't find extended footage of him bowling but if he's just considered too slow then I gotta say the doesn't look slower than Boland or Neser.
He's definitely slower than both. He's unfortunately the poster child for just how rotten Shield pitches have been of late; though ironically that would have made him a great fit for this game.

He's a yard slower than them. 126-130. If we were touring England with traditional pitches I'd consider him but that won't happen until after McCullum and Key are gone, which could be a while.

Similar to Mitch Johnson during his career. Funny how they have similarish figures and averages. Both not world class overall- around 28 average.

Left arm, the issue is they can be wayward, not many consistent left armers in the recent history- only Akram is there. Zaheer khan for india averaged 32, admittedly on placid pitches.

This pitch was a poster child for how rotten Shield pitches have been as of late. This was the lowest averaging match at Sydney since one on a heavily rain affected pitch against India in 1947.

Honestly think this series win is a harbinger of Australian advantage in BGT for the foreseeable future.

They will tour India next with a lot more confidence with Ashwin gone. Bumrah IMO will not tour Australia again and he is a trumpcard to any India win in Aus.
Next BGT is in 2027, by then Australian team will be much older (than they already are) or will have several new faces. India would still have Kuldeep, and possibly Jadeja and Bumrah. Winning in India in 2 years won't be as easy as you are imagining.

Lyon 39
Smith 37.5 possibly retired
Khawaja 40 - retired
Starc 37 - retired
Boland 38 - retired

Head 33
Labuschagne 32.5
Cummins 33.5

Furthermore, Bumrah just turned 31 now, every chance we will make the next trip to Australia in 2028 (Cummins too will be 35.5). Not to mention it is wild to assume India will produce no good fast bowlers in 4 whole years and 'beyond'. Bumrah has been inspiring the next generation and I am confident that more pacers will emerge out of India in the coming decade as more kids and teens grow up wanting to be fast bowlers. Previously role models were always tendulkar dravid kohli etc now Bumrah is as big as any. So you are absolutely wrong on all counts imo... "foreseeable future"

Oh yeah this was absolute junk. I really hope they get a poor rating from the ICC and it's the last straw for the current SCG curator and his mob because they really have no idea what they're doing up there.

Durability notwithstanding, you'd think Jhye Richardson would have been a nightmare on this pitch. Skiddy quick bowler who knows how to bowl on bouncy decks? Good luck.
I get nervous about Richardson because of his fragility and the fact he can't field properly. But in terms of style he's the most similar bowler we have to Bumrah.

One thing that I don't think helped Starc was Marsh's inability to bowl more than a few overs. He was probably bowling more than he needed to. But that excuse holds less for the second innings this test.

I mean, the last innings of this series is where you'd expect those debts to finally come due; I think Marsh hanging around like a bad smell is responsible for a lot of that. He really wore himself out at Brisbane on that fourth day because Marsh was "tactically" not bowling.

Had they been sensible, and declared Marsh not fit/underdone at Adelaide, then that likely doesn't happen and this discussion doesn't happen.

This series is worse than even 1999 from future perspective. In 1999 we got Laxman (167 knock at SCG ) , we got Kohli in. 2011/12 , we get no one from this tour .

Starc was cooked by then though
Yeah - also in complete fairness to him he was unlucky after Adelaide in particular. That spell in the second innings in Melbourne has to be up there with some of his best and somehow he only got one wicket from it.

I don't mind a spicy pitch, it was certainly better than the perpetual parade of placid pitches we had before, but this was a bit too spicy.
