What has even happened to Aaron Hardie. He was the red-ball all rounder in waiting a couple years ago, they shove him in every meaningless white ball squad and now he gets leap frogged comprehensively by Beau Webster who was nowhere in the reckoning 2 years ago. Makes you think
They're idiots with no ability to plan. When Hardie started off in the Shield he looked like he had a well sorted technique too, now he's like any other wafter.

The refusal to accept that Starc isn't infinitely durable is something I continue to find somewhat baffling.
I think it's because they don't think they have a good replacement for his 'variety'. If Haze has a little niggle they're quite happy to rotate him out for Boland because they're so similar, but they're more resistant to rest Starc because they don't have another similar bowler. But when he's just wasting the new ball and/or getting smashed they don't get bonus points for him being faster or left arm, so they really need to rethink that policy.

Durability notwithstanding, you'd think Jhye Richardson would have been a nightmare on this pitch. Skiddy quick bowler who knows how to bowl on bouncy decks? Good luck.

Next ashes Starc only plays the pink ball test, wrapped in cotton wool around that test ,and plays maybe another 1-2 tests. Not 5 tests in a series. Boland starts every test, and a battle for the final pacer spot between Hazlewood(injury permitting), Jhye richardson, Michael Neser and Fergus O Neill. That will be the squad for the Ashes and is fair imho. Fergus warrants selection- he got 25 wickets @ 19 in the current Shield season, and is only 23 years old.

Imagine how insane an attack of Haze, Cummins and Boland would be on this type of wicket, hypothetically. But while Starc is around that could never happen

Yeah exactly, and Starc was just as likely to break down as him this time given he was carrying that injury anyway. Plus the allrounder was actually fit to bowl this match!

They cite his speeds but his speeds aren't the problem! It's the accuracy! Really drives me mad how many times they repeat the same mistakes.
In other series his speeds have dropped too, but yeah it's the control. He still managed to do worse than his career average this series despite some friendly pitches (though certainly not as friendly overall as the prior few years). His bowling was fine in the first innings here, but he nearly lost us the match in about fifteen minutes with his second innings.

I was full on dooming after that first spell, because that's the sort of thing which can set such an awful tone for the entire innings that it becomes very hard to wrestle back. Thankfully Boland did his thing.
