Nah... Ash is very close to his dad and I guess so would most other players but most of these fathers speak what they think than what they know in the media. Its literally what Ash referred to, in his tweet clarifying this matter as well.

Damn I'm pretty shocked by this, retiring mid series? Something mustn't be right behind the scenes.

I was convinced he was going to go another 2 home seasons and tople Kumble's total before hanging it up.

What a player, India are going to struggle to replace him imo and better hope they find somebody before Jadeja quits too.

I think Ashwin probably respects Jadeja enough that he can see why he gets left out for him (even if it's dumb, because Jadeja can make the team as a pure batsman and Ashwin can be the lead spinner but hey the team management are stupid). Probably really stung him that he was left out for Sundar though and if so, can't really blame him. Sundar is nowhere near good enough with the ball, and nowhere near proven enough with the bat (yet) to justifiably replace someone like Ashwin at this stage.

Good post and I strongly feel that this should be the reason.

He had a wonderful career. Bit of a HTB but most spinners are. Incredible match winner at home. Indian great for sure. Also, he seemed like a decent fellow, so props for that.

I love the fact that I never thought of this at all till now, but Ash and the others who wrote about this are right. He is not a gifted athlete and its not some outrageous natural talent ( at least the popular definition of it) that you see coursing through his veins or whatever. But he is an epitome of what hardwork, intelligence and passion for the craft can propel you to. His genius has always been subtle. The way he talks about how even at the U19 level, he bowled spin only because of the sea breeze across Chepauk which meant the fast bowlers didn't wanna bowl from one end and how he learned a lot of what we now call his variations, before he ever learnt to bowl a proper offbreak with rip.

Its also unintentionally funny how awkward he is while talking about himself and yet at the same time, he keeps using some superlatives to describe himself or his own performances. And its not even arrogance, its just a matter of fact way, like he is talking about any other cricketer.

I think the biggest reason he probably retired is he wants to try more different stuff with his bowling and cricket and maybe international cricket with the stuff that is on the line is not the best place to try it. Which makes sense.

And I love all the shout outs to the greatest city in the world, esp. the intro by Atherton. Suck on it haterz....

Sound extremely similar to a bowling version of Kumar Sangakkara. Both had demanding fathers for another similarity. That is why I said, these two will take similar paths.

Sounds pretty talented to me if he picked up bowling late and was almost immediately good at it. He also added 6 test hundreds for fun.

To do it despite his poor athleticism means he was very talented imo.
